You can often find larger cages/hutches for less second hand on gumtree or eBay etc. Just give it a good clean and disinfect before use. A lot of people like C&C grids (I'd love to have C&C!) or make their own enclosure.
Better safe than sorry. It could well be early fungal, but the vet will be able to tell you for sure. What treatment did you use last time? I have found Imaverol (which is an anti-fungal dip that you leave on) it by far thebest treatment for anything fungal. You dip the whole animal, so no area...
Guinea pig lice are very common, they usually come in on hay so it may well be worthwhile throwing away all hay and getting a new batch of a good brand (often the cheaper hays are worst for lice). Ensure you disinfect all of your piggies cage/hutch and wash any bedding at 60 degrees or more...
also forgot - normally I clean these boys first and hold them and after do Chewy and his Mrs Poppy so that her smells isnt on me to upset Spud and Freckles too much - I take it I should be careful not to transfer anything to them but should I just give them a bath too and do a total disinfect to...
that would be great too - how often do you need to do the Imaverol? There fleeces are washed at 60 degrees always and hay changed daily but I take it I need to thoroughly disinfect the hutch too? many thanks!
Hmm, just done a full clean for the first time and the (wooden) hutch is really quite damp at the back corners. I have cleaned with disinfectant but need to find someway to stop the wood getting wet! Is there a piggie safe varnish?
I agree with the previous knowledgeable posters.
- please have the poo tested (cultured) in case there is a highly contagious element. The protozoa @gizzy mentions is called giardia.
- do not bond your bereaved piggy with a new one, in case it is the (unaffected) carrier of whatever is causing...
Your second one is better, yes :) And yes you can use fleece in outdoor hutches, just as successfully as with indoor ones.
Bigger is always best when you can, as they like to have room to run around.
It is also worth considering second-hand, as you can get huge hutches sometimes for very...
the only thing i can add - as i am pretty new to being a piggy owner - is to use the F10 disinfectant .. this was recommend to me when one of my piggies had a fungal infection x That was for the hutch - NOT the piggie lol !
Elma is just finishing her course of antibiotics and drops for a very severe case of conjunctivitis, and her eyes have been normal for at least a week. However, I have just noticed that Elphie is displaying the same symptoms, and have requested a vets appointment (waiting to hear back). I'm...
Hi All,
Hoping for some advice as I don't know how to get rid of fruit flies in my pigs bedroom area of their hutch. I had a through disinfectant and airing of the hutch at the start of the week. It was literally spotless. I know today has been humid but I still seem to have a fruit fly problem...
Hmm, weird, it didn't notify me about your tag. :hmm:
Personally I use 50/50 distilled vinegar and water in a spray bottle for cleaning my double hutch and indoor cage. Normally I give the cage and hutch floor a scrub, leave to dry, then scrub a second time before letting it dry and putting...
I have dealt with quite a number of guinea pigs with ringworm and have never caught it myself. I use F10 disinfectant in the cages/hutches and I use F10 hand wash before and after handling any piggies. I wear a disposable apron which is changed after handling a guinea pig with ringworm.
Hi,
What methods do you use to clean your guinea pigs home?
What disinfectants do you use and recommend?
What homemade cleaning solutions do you use and how do you make them?
Thanks!
Edit : Need tips ... As @Ruby Inferno and I are doing a sticky on this.
sorry, what should i clean the hutch with? not the hibiscrub? I have got normal pet disinfectant but i can't find the bit that said i need something stronger ?
Red spieder mites are not guinea pig specific skin parasites, but on the other hand, you don't want them around. I just found some weaving a nest to some C&C grids in my living room! it seems to be their year... :(
If the mites and other insects are a persistent problem, then you may want to...
