Do fleece hideys need 2 exits for boars?

Hello, We’ve just adopted our first guinea pigs, two 2 year old boars called Teddy and Pip. They’ve been having some dominance tussles since we brought them home a week ago, including a few fights with no blood shed, which thankfully have calmed down since we extended their cage to 6x2 and put...

    Licking off miconazole cream!

Hi You need to wait each time for 48 hours (2 days) after every bath or spot-on treatment in order to allow it to be full absorbed and not just washed away by the next treatment. This rule applies for both fungal and skin parasites. They do need unfortunately different treatments for each...

Found spider in guinea cage, should I be worried?

I was spot cleaning and found a freshly killed huntsman (I'm pretty sure) and it's shed. No idea what killed it, but my guinea pigs were happily walking over it. I just want to know if they'll be fine, or if I should worry. I know huntsmans aren't venomous, so I think they'll be fine.

    Straw bedding

I know some use raviera which is chopped straw. Straw has no nutritional value though so if they do try to eat it then it’s doing nothing for them. Hay is better bedding as they can also eat it. Perhaps as a compromise you could layer some straw for insulation at the bottom and then top it...

    Bianca 🤍

Correction and addition: The vet gave her a month to live and, when asked, said that six months would be overly optimistic. Her fame spread amongst the vets, who were amazed when they saw how well she was in spite of the visibly large tumour, one even taking a photo of her.

    Handheld vacuum recommendations

I've used hand held vacuums before and they quickly get clogged with hay, are noisy for the guinea pig and aren't particularly effective in sucking up the shedding. I would recommend just shaking the fleece outside. This usually gets rid of most of it.

    Cheapest place for veg/salad? Hay?

It’s not too late to still sow lettuce seed now! My hay bales are just in the shed with the piggies

    How loud are guinea pigs?

It really varies - some are very loud, some are quiet. It’s not just the wheeking, it’s also the running around their cage. A loud guinea pig can be hard from quite a distance though. I have four piggies who live in my shed. I have two who barely make a sound. One who will talk a bit...

    New babies

I love my shed! I can’t have my animals indoors so the shed is my space to just go and sit for some quiet! (I have the four piggies in one shed and two rabbits in a separate space). It’s supposed to contain the piggy mess but I still end up with hay indoors! Would be easier if my two...

    Extra warmth during winter

Hi Suzie, my Peruvians live in a similar set up outside. They have been fine and I think if they aclimatise well ,possibly they are hardier for it. I have a thermometer next to the cage . My rule of thumb is if the temp drops below freezing I keep a close eye but for 3 winters we havent had any...

    Black flakes in Piggys fur

Hi This looks like shed dead skin flakes to me. What I cannot tell you without a hands-on examination is whether this is the start of mange mites, a fungal skin infection or just seasonal shedding. Please see a vet if you see bald patches appearing or have any concerns.

    Kidney failure?

I’m sorry to hear this. Hopefully further tests will shed some light on his issue. Were his teeth checked is the vet thought dental issues? In the meantime, make sure to syringe feed him and weigh him daily. Not Eating, Weight Loss And The Importance Of Syringe Feeding Fibre All About...

    Litter/Hay Tray

Yes, they're also not big enough. I used a rabbit litter box (with grid removed) for my rats as a litter box and as a sandbath for a hamster. I can't see a pig or rabbit even fitting in them at all! Yes mucking out pigs will be a breeze in comparison. You can use hay and shavings marketed for...

    Bored Pigs...

It’s lovely that you want to be able to buy them things but actually it’s not what they need. Mental stimulation is what is important. Scattering veg is a great one and actually with feeding the veg wet, the amount of additional water they would actually take in is negligible (certainly not...

    Hutch reccomendations

Hi all newbie here. I'm looking into getting a pair of guinea pigs either from rescue or breeder. Currently looking at hutch options. They would be outside, but in bad weather could have access to a shed, obvs thermal and waterproof cover on as well if needed. What hutches do you all...

    Help please!

Hi I am sorry but we really cannot tell you without hands-on access. It is not quite as easy as one quick look. Whatever it is, it doesn't look serious but it is good to have it seen and to hear what your vet things. Because there are no/very few hairs on the ears (to help guinea pigs shed...

    Red Lump Eye

Hello, my guinea pig has had a small red lump at the bottom of her eye ever since I can remember, very small and looked like a small bit of skin poking up a little, but the past two days it's really bulging up and looks strange like an extra mass of tissue. She's got a vet appointment tomorrow...
