In the run I have some polar fleece on top of a plastic baked mattress protector. Underneath both I have an off cut of cheap lino. In the hutch I have CandE fleece liners (on top of washable puppy pads) which I'm very happy with. Like you I was having lots of bedding (4 bin bags a week) to get...
I'd call ours inside-outside piggies, or half-outside piggies. We had intended for them to live outside all year round and mega-insulated their hutch accordingly. However, within a couple of weeks of bringing the 6-7 week-old piggies home last September, we realised this wasn't going to work as...
The liners have only been in the hutch for a week. The piggies seem to be enjoying them. The inside of the hutch certainly wasn't damp at all with all the rain we had last winter the hay was nice and dry (except for the wee) so hopefully I won't have a problem with damp fleece in the winter...
Wooden hides are great, particularly in a shed becasue they won't get damp.
What I would do is get a cheap fleece blanket (ikea are good for this) and cut out a piece that covers the top and sides, and then cut the side pieces into strips.
Guinea pigs seem to like running through strips of...
i bring as many of my outside piggies indoors from mid november .the ones that stay outside all year ,i do as piggie and buns has stated ! i use snugglesafe heat pads as the temps start to drop to below 6 degrees.just stuff hay in the hutch as much as i can get in,when temps get to 10...
Hi Thanks for reply, the attach button is now there but was not maybe not there on first post, she eats well and is put outside during the day to eat grass, they have a big hutch and run with fleece blankets to keep them warm, she has got thinner as she has got older but no different in the last...
My boys love to scent their freshly washed fleeces (why do I bother) so that can pong a bit occasionally, but generally they’re not too smelly and fresh hay has a lovely scent.
There are lots of products these days for people who keep their guinea pigs outside. Snuggle safe pads can be slipped...
That's understandable. Ok so not a risk you can remove completely? That's ok I'll just keep an eye and get them treatment of and when.
Oh yes forgot they had access to both levels. Haha. Yes moving them outdoors is still going to happen, just when temperatures are more steady.
In the winter...
My pigs wouldn't be able to have lawn time.
:( Moss covers the garden and I have dogs. There's also foxes and many birds of prey. I'll be growing some grass specifically for them (Trixie small animal grass or something) but whether I'll be able to put the tray in there for them to have a little...
In winter you won’t be able to bring them in and out. Once the temperature drops, it has to be one or the other - they don’t like large temperature fluctuations. If you have to bring them in due to not being warm enough outside then they will have to stay in.
Do you have a hutch, you say cage...
Ah ok so is that just a scrap bit of fleece or is it made to fit that hide specially?
I'll leave fleece cosies for warmer weather then. I always check the hay before I buy it. I always buy the most green and nice smelling (yes I smell inside the packaging, people probably think I'm nuts) I only...
that type of bed is risky/won’t work for a couple of reasons -
1 - and this is a piggy dependent thing - but mine had one of those and absolutely hated it, flatly refused to use it.
2 - you can’t use any fabric bedding items outside as it simply won’t dry during cold wet nights (and days for...
Our girls have resided in the shed over the winter months but as the weather is improving I was wondering about moving them back out, they won't be able to have the heater that is in their hutch when we put them back out but we have heat pads, we were also covering them with an old duvet so...
I don’t think I can handle the smell of keeping my guinea pigs indoors anymore. I can clean them everyday but my the evening I can smell them. I’ve used so many different types of bedding. Hemp wood shavings, normal wood shavings with newspaper lining, shredded paper, fleece blankets with...
Haha thank you the butterfly polar fleeces are £2.99 each from the onlinehomeshop! and originally I brought just 36 too! Then I ended up buying more! (For the bonding pen and to add an extra story or two) and then I realized I didn't actually need the grids I could just make it from correx to...
Hi all
Yesterday I took my guinea pig boy, Sweetcorn, to the vets as his eye looked really cloudy....
It turns out his eye has been damaged, most likely by a poke in the eye from Hay!
Oh NO.....
He has pain killers & eye drops and we are going back in 5 days for a check up.
Poor lad.
My main...
I’ve always had the concern whether towels really dry do quickly enough and lock urine away nicely when used under fleece. If the towels don’t dry out then the fleece is pressing down on wet towels and to me that doesn’t seem like a good thing to have happen.
Keeping them outside is a lot of...
Hello there 😊
I've just joined but have been reading the forum for a while.
I have two beautiful rescued skinny pigs Frankie and Pinkie (they were living outside with rabbits, now Inside in a large hutch). I've had them a year, the little one was just a few 6 weeks old, Frankie was about 12...
I also avoid FB groups now. The only groups I have are books group. I had experience in the past of linking this forum to a post for advice, and an admin removed my post saying no outside links allowed and was warned. So I left that group. Another group was a poster kept on posting her small...
