Hello, my older girl (6 last December) has lost some hair on her belly and sides, we took her fur a scan and she has an ovarian cyst. It's still quite small and she is eating drinking behaving as normal. The vet seemed to want us to decide if we spay her or wait and see. I don't want to wait for...
Hi,
My unneutered boar, Fudge (3.5 years) lost his best friend boar Snowy a few weeks ago. He didn’t seem like his usual self so I decided to look for a friend. I spoke to lots of local rescues and went with one that has spayed females as I thought this would be the best option for him as he...
Has anyone else had a female guinea pig whose dominance increased or persisted for several weeks after an ovarian cyst spay? One of my piggies had a full ovarian cyst spay on the 7th November, and for the past 6 weeks or so, she has been consistently displaying dominant behaviour. She lives with...
Hello,
I would like to know about owners who had their older sows (from 7-8 years old) spayed.
My sow is going to be spayed on Tuesday as her uterine mass is leaking from her vulva (it has stopped for now, but could start again). The vet will remove the uterine and the ovaries (which are...
Hello All,
I am hoping for some wisdom regarding my spayed sow Honey.
Honey had a spay in November 2025 due to ovarian cysts, and last week I noticed that on her right side there was a hard roundish feeling lump where her cyst used to be, I cant give an estimate on the size but its noticeable...
I had several five year old sows spayed with no issues, even though a couple of them were emergency spays for very fast growing large fluid filled cysts.
Anyway, I wish your girl a good recovery.
Tips For Post-operative Care
...without it.
I don't know if the reaction could happen again or if it would be better another time. If it was due to the vet (the practice is not exotic but the vet themselves is).
We are in Kent and open to recommendations if anyone has success spaying recently and who with. Happy to travel.
Hi just to let people know Ophi had her spay and sailed through! Home and eating well, just a little spaced. Fingers crossed she will have a happy year or two ahead of her.
Hi everyone,
My Guinea pig (2 years old) is due to have a spay operation on Monday due to suspected ovarian cysts. The vets attempted an ultrasound yesterday but she was in so much pain that they had to use anaesthetic. When they brought her back through she looked very distressed and the vet...
Saskia on the Los Angeles Guinea Pig Rescue YouTube channel talks about medication for ovarian cysts as an alternative to spaying. A specialised exotic vet might know more about using the medicine approach as an alternative to spaying. I think it is called Systorlane, but someone more...
I wonder if being neutered makes a difference to their place in the hierarchy. It might be making it less easy to predict where Espresso first in. She was spayed to save her life and she is in every sense a lovely piggy. Perhaps she would get on better with a young female piggy?
...happened in one of my piggies.
I asked for her opinion, and she told me that she wouldn't usually advise this, but suggested that I avoid spaying and instead focus on pain management for the rest of Phoebe's life. I asked her why and she said she didn't like the idea of removing those cysts...
I wish you all the best. I've had several up to 5 years old sows successfully spayed and some that were too old and frail just live out their lives with them.
Hi all,
Made a few posts recently about my pig Honey who had a hefty ovarian cyst removed. Recovery went well, reintroduction after one day in a recovery pen (didnt know it was going to cause a potential bond to break) went well. Honey has continued to be the leader, and all was happy in the...
Hi all,
My piggy recently had an ovariohysterectomy (around 2.5 weeks ago). Recovering well and getting back to her normal self. She has started peeing over her back end and as a result her feet have become sore. She seems to be sitting in her pee after she has done it. They have trays of hay...
...loss etc). She also examined my other 1 year old piggy and said that she couldn’t feel cystic ovaries on her but would recommend prophylactic spaying.
I’m just wondering if this is necessary? She doesn’t seem uncomfortable. I believe the UTI was from being at the boarders as I just picked...
Where are you located? Is your vet guinea pig savy? If it was me, I would look for another vet for a second opinion. I had a guinea pig that suffered with bleeding from the genitals and the first vet we saw said that it was a period. Didn't believe that and went to another vet and was found she...
