Hello, my older girl (6 last December) has lost some hair on her belly and sides, we took her fur a scan and she has an ovarian cyst. It's still quite small and she is eating drinking behaving as normal. The vet seemed to want us to decide if we spay her or wait and see. I don't want to wait for her to be in pain, but I'm wondering if others have had spay success stories in older girls? I'm aware of her age, but apparently she is in very good health ☺️

Saskia on the Los Angeles Guinea Pig Rescue YouTube channel talks about medication for ovarian cysts as an alternative to spaying. A specialised exotic vet might know more about using the medicine approach as an alternative to spaying. I think it is called Systorlane, but someone more experienced than me will hopefully come along to discuss it (I have boars). I agree that a big op at the age of six could be risky. I hope things work out and that the issue can be treated ❤️🙏

My RB Ellie had 2x 2 injections of HCG Chorulon injections, she was 6yrs old for the first 2,then had her second batch of 2 at 7yrs old.

My vet said she wasn't confident enough to operate on Ellie at her age (hers was a walnut sized ovarian cyst-diagnosed with an ultrasound, after continuous uti's & very heavy genital bleeding).

Generally speaking I couldn't find any information on negative side effects from the injections, it seemed to be a case of they either worked or they didn't.

They worked wonders with Ellie, she only had one bad bleed a few days after the first injection & never again :)

If you would like some more information, I'll find out my old threads for you :tu:

Good luck with your vet decision & healing vibes being sent 🤗 xx
Here's a quote from a previous post of mine.

Since Ellie having the (HCG) Chorulon hormone injections ,my Tiggy 6yrs old also had the injections and they worked well for her too
Try discussing with your vet, they usually have to order the hormone treatment in if a small animal vets. It's actually a cattle hormone, so the vet may need to get advice on the dosage from the manufacturer that's what mine did with Ellie.
It's a small dose used &the excess has to be disposed of as it has no shelf life once opened.

Hi just to let people know Ophi had her spay and sailed through! Home and eating well, just a little spaced. Fingers crossed she will have a happy year or two ahead of her.

I had several five year old sows spayed with no issues, even though a couple of them were emergency spays for very fast growing large fluid filled cysts.

Anyway, I wish your girl a good recovery.
Tips For Post-operative Care

We had a 2.5 year old spayed 9 days ago. She struggled, it is such a big surgery. We were back at the vets twice last week and it was 5 days before she was being her scampy self.

It's not a direct comparison for you but it really felt touch-and-go for a couple of days, and Cheryl is a big pig and usually a bundle of energy.

I’m so glad to hear Cheryl is back to her scampy self 🥰
These piggies do worry us 😬
