as some of you may know poppy had her babies on the 14th and so there now just over a week old today I’ve noticed there might be some problems with the babies teeth! :( the top teeth seem to be growing inwards and I can’t see any teeth at the bottom! Normal? Or are they just young? I’ve tried to get a picture of 1 of the babies teeth but there really wriggling!

This is not normal. Please see an experienced vet, ideally a dental savvy one. Your baby is likely going to need regular life-long clipping of the upper incisors because they lack the automatic self-sharpening against the lower incisors.

It may also struggle to compete with other piggies at food time as it will not be able to pick up and cut food as well as the others. Cutting veg into fine strips can help.

Yes, it is likely caused by inbreeding. Please see a vet promptly; guinea pigs have the quickest growing teeth of all rodents. Those teeth need clipping as soon as you can to prevent them from making eating and chewing very difficult.

The good news is that with regular clipping and a little support from you, she can still have a happy and normal life span. My Hywel survived just fine with only one lower incisor, and I know that @karonus has a piggy that needed both incisors removing.

Thankyou for your advice @Wiebke if they do need it trimming regularly how regularly will they need it doing? Also would they show me how to do it after the first couple of times? I go to james street vet practice in Louth lincolnshire x

You have to have it done as often as needed; it is not a big procedure. I do not know how piggy savvy your clinic is, so I cannot comment on this. Clipping and filing when done incorrectly (as by some rodentologists) can cause permanent damage when the teeth are split.

We have been taking Astro to see Simon at Cat and Rabbit every 4 weeks for about 2 years now. He gets his back teeth checked at the same time. Astro is now about 7 and still enjoys life.

Thankyou for your help

Not sure it's something you should do on your own! :yikes:

Please don't try cutting the teeth yourself. If the teeth splinter, infection can get into the pulp cavity and then the piggy is in danger of developing an abscess. You've been in touch with me on the TEAS FB page. Just keep a close eye on them for now, monitor weight and let me know how they are looking in a week or so. We may be able to sort transport to get them seen by Simon Maddock.

Thankyou so much! Don’t worry I’m not cutting them myself I’d be to scared to unless a vet showed me. I was planning on keeping them but if it happeneds that they do need clipping eatch month and my vet costs to much with travel etc would it be possible for you to take them on? I’m going to leave it for a while and monitor them like you said and have a chat with my partner if I can I really want to keep them I just got to think what’s best for them x I’m
Bloody heartbroken I love them

There will always be a place here, if they need it! xx

I know it isn't quite the same thing, but years ago (when we lived in the UK) I adopted a chinchilla with ongoing dental problems, most likely due to inbreeding.
He had to have his teeth trimmed monthly, and his brother had to have his done 3 - 4 times a year.
After the initial consultation, the vet realised it would be a regular and ongoing issue and used to do the monthly teeth trip for a greatly reduced price (I paid 5 pounds a time).
I would simply pop in at the end of surgery and wait until he had seen the last patient, then he would pop my boy on the table and clip his teeth.
The whole thing never took more than 5 minutes.
He also used to have a GA once a year for a full teeth check, and obviously this cost a lot more, but overall he was a happy boy who had a good life despite his dental issues.

Today I managed to get some fairly good pictures baby’s weights are at 172g and 174g :) I also have a video but says it’s to large to upload x

Awww, they are so precious, poor little things! The bad news is that they are going to need ongoing dental care... but the good news is that with that care they stand every chance to have full and happy lives! I would say it would be important to assess the back teeth that you can't see easily to see where things stand back there too. I know all too well how vet costs can add up, but if you have a vet you regularly use, you could always ask about ongoing care at a reduced rate. I know when I had a pig with chronic issues, my vet was great about doing routine maintenance at a lower rate, gave me some free followups, gave me some supplies free or at cost, etc. There are definitely vets out there who are willing to work with an owner who is willing to put the time and energy into a chronic situation in order to make it more manageable financially. Best wishes to your two little mites there, they really are lovely!

Just managed to upload it to YouTube I’ll leave it up a few days then take it down. It seems
There really trying to eat bless them

Thankyou :) I’ve been emailing my local vets and doing research . I know your not vets but do you think they will need life time of teeth trims? If so how many times a month etc? I got this email from the vet today.

and the other vets who’s abit ferther away who castrated my boar said they will do a free consaltation.

What a little sweetheart. I can’t offer any advice but really hoping you manage to find a solution that works for you and the babies :)

Jet only had one lower incisor so we need to get his trimmed regularly, with Jet we need to go every 2 months or so (we try to give him things to gnaw on - I'm not sure how much this really helps but it makes us feel better). I noticed one of yours had a little stump for bottom teeth - it may be worth asking the vet what the prognosis is for those teeth?

Thankyou so much for the replies I’m so upset :( every 2 months is not bad I’m going to try my best to get these babies the care they need I love them to bits! x If I cannot give them the regular care at the vets they need then someone on here has offered to take them on for me witch is very kind x

So pleased just watched Percy munch a slice of carrot down in less then 3 mins I did use the carrot peeler for them and chopped bell pepper down to thin slices and her and bear are giving it a good go! :) they both do have 1 tooth at the bottom but it go’s into like a point seems like they have not long ago come though the gum!

I’m slightly hoping that once there 2 top front teeth get cut down that maybe them manageing to chew on veggies may help them to keep there teeth down? Or am I getting my hopes up? x but I’m so happy that I have watched Percy eat some carrot and bear was trying with some sliced greens! ☺️ She did do a lot of head bopping she looked like she was nodding her head up and down saying yes lol x
