Well not literally 10lbs but it got your attention :-)
I've got 2 piggies. Have had them a few weeks. They've settled in so well. Eating well and take it from my fingers and hand. They love their cuddles.
My only problem is I've never seen so much poop. I'm cleaning the cage 3, sometimes 4 times a day. I can't bear to see a piece of poop in their cage. I use sawdust and care fresh. I keep thinking about using fleece but then I'll only worry about their pee pee.
Am I being too paranoid?
Is it usual for them to produce soooo much poop?
Thank you

Yes they poo a lot! its even worse if you have a skinny pig! I would try limit yourself to twice daily poop picking at a certain time or you'll drive yourself mad lol!

I also cannot believe how much poop they are able to produce! I cleaned their cage completely the other day, fresh fleece and bedding and as I turned around to get the hay, one pig had already run into that specific area and desolated it with at least 5 pieces of poop!

I think they store it up until their home is nice and clean!

@ Lorraine - you don't have OCD by any chance? :lol!: I know what you mean but honestly they poop loads and usually in quick succession. I think if you went to fleece you will find it even worse. It's even more obvious the volume of poop with that bedding, I tried, I saw...i conquered by getting rid of fleece and went back to auboise.
Good luck

We use fleece for the cage, with bath towel and puppy pads underneath.Have just, a week ago got a corner litter tray, with paper based litter covered with hay, the piggywiggles have taken to it straight away, have to empty that once a day and literally tidy round two small sweeps morning and before bed, they're also using it to pee in, so towel and pads a lot drier as well.

I never realised just how much poop they produced until I switched from loose bedding to vetbed. With fleece or vetbed you are going to see EVERY poop on the surface. And in my household there is never a moment when there is not some poop visible. I've put the boys in a freshly cleaned cage & Peanut Butter immediately goes around inspecting everything & pooping as he waddles about - he doesn't even stop to toilet. I've decided having piggies means constant poop & I just limit myself to poop pickups every morning & every night.

I console myself that at least I don't have to worry about peeing like I did with loose bedding. All the wee just goes through the vetbed to the towelling underneath & it all gets washed once a week. When I had loose bedding I'd have to pick up the wet clumped wee'd upon stuff & replace with fresh at least twice a day. And as the poops get hidden in the bedding I now realise that no way was I getting rid of all the poops before.

I also console myself with the fact that a prolifically pooping piggy is healthy & happy!.

Lol nope not OCD just can't bear to see poop. I'm the same with our dogs. I'm out that garden scooping before they've even finished pooping lol.

Do they just pee in the litter tray or poop too? I've got a corner one. I put some of their poop and damp sawdust in there but they just kept tipping it over so I took it out.

They pee and poop!, and rather yuckily munch on the hay, hopefully not the peed on bits !

Mine goes through phases. Sometimes there will hardly be anything in the cage for a few hours. After that it's like poo central. They LOVE a freshly changed sheet. More places to wee

We went to the London petshow and were given some free samples for litter for piggies, so then brought a corner litter tray and put it in the cage. They tried to eat a couple of bits but soon got bored , we put hay rack above it so they hadto eat hay standing in the litter tray, then pooped while eating, we have since moved to paper based litter which doesn't go to like mush when wet, the other sample ones went like sawdust, not good for chest . Just seem to have taken to it.

I'm going to give it another go. Thank you for that advice x

I wish we could train them to be like hamsters. They poop in a little toilet area and pee in another toilet area and are so clean it's amazing. I even had one once who when his poop corner was 'full' used to pick them up and throw them out of the cage until I cleaned him out! Now if guineas could be that clean I would be very happy!

I wish my roborovski hamster would be like that. Her cage is clean.....because she poops in her little house.

Oh naughty girl! Mine are Syrians but the boys are much cleaner than the girls ...unlike humans :yahoo:

How do you get them to pee and poop in the litter tray? What did you do to get them to start.
I bought two large rabbit corner litter trays and line them with newspaper then fill it with hay and placed these unde a hay rack. As piggies more or less eat where they poop they sit there grazing and just poop in the trays. I have been lucky they took to it. As in regards to fleece you wont have to worry about their wee as a good quality cage liner soaks the wee in and holds it insode thus a dry top! I am just a very pro fleece person :)

all do great fleece products :)

I'm trying to 'toilet train' two of mine. I got a roasting tin and lined it with newspaper and put hay in it and then a hay rack hooked above it, hopefully they get the idea..

I used a roasting tray because I think that cat litter trays are too deep for them to jump into ")

Stolen this idea - litter trays sold in stores all seem to big. Lined a tray with paper and hay with their hay rack above it... They're still pooping everywhere but their wee seems more concentrated in that area which is a start!

I use TRIXIE corner rabbit litter trays in medium. Perfect size and a low front for them to climb into ok. I try wherever possible to get stuff thats easy to use/not sharp due to worrying that anything not smooth, low etc could cut my boys skin. tmp_10_Rabbit_Corner_Litter_Pan_Large_Classic_Colour162189689.webp tmp_$(KGrHqVHJEgFJ5_7Z)ZpBSe8SSKvY!~~60_35.JPG1643639014.webp They are big enough for a hayrack to fit over the top and do not take up much room. They are also very easy to clean.

I to can't stop picking the poo up all the time.Mine live upstairs at the moment
and i am always going up to talk to them and i just have to poo clean every time i do.Mine are on newspaper with puppy pads on top towel on top of that then vetbed and fleece.

@Lorraine They have small stomachs and they don't get much space to store their poop lol so they have to poo quite often.
As some of you said, try poop picking :P

You think guinea pigs poop a lot, you should see my chickens! Guinea pigs are easier to clean up!

I roll up their fleece blankets into a bundle and take them out and shake the blankets into the recycling bin, at least once a day. Makes the once a week major clean out much easier and cleaner and especially due to the hot weather, less smelly!
