Hi, I recently adopted a pair of 18 month old intact boars, Lil' Monst (rex) and Dave (long hair).

They are housed in a C&C next to another pair of boars. A couple of metres away there are two more C&C with three other pigs awaiting introduction (a castrated boar and sow, and a single sow).

Dave is super-chilled, but Lil' Monst gets extremely excited whenever he hears, sees or smells another pig, be it male or female.

I've had to put thick cardboard between Lil Monst and Dave's C&C and their neighbouring boar pair, otherwise he constantly gnaws at the grids, and when I let the others have floor time I have to completely cover the entire C&C with cardboard as he goes nuts if they come anywhere near.

My question is, I have been removing the cardboard and supervising at short intervals to see if he can build up a 'tolerance' to the other pigs. Am I wasting my time doing this, would it be kinder to him to move him and Dave far away from the others?

Thanks for reading.

ps he's fine with Dave, it's just other pigs that wind him up

Sorry I can't really help as I have no experience of boar pairs. I'm sure someone with the experience will pop along shortly

I would see whether a longer distance or a different room will do the trick. Since the two are together, it is not like they don't have company.
Some boys, especially teenagers can be extremely sensitive. They are thankfully rather rare, but you have obviously got one!

I ended up putting a barrier between them and the other pigs, which was working fine, but the other day I removed it for something and Monster got really wound up rumbling through the bars at one of my other pigs, and then took it out on Dave, biting him twice.

I've now got two single lonely boars on opposite sides of the room.

Dave is still near the other pigs, he's the chilled out one.

Monster has been moved far away from all of them but he looks so sad.

I'm not sure what to do next - am I right in that it's game over for these two boys now?

Given that Monster is so highly strung would it be sensible to get him neutered so he can potentially be bonded with a sow?
