Hello piggie lovers,

Not sure why I'm posting this on here, suppose its a small warning and feel it dutiful to let others know. My little Abyssinian Harriet jumped up on to her platform on Saturday just gone and tore off her whole claw on her left foot! I wasnt there at the time but luckily my partner was. She was squealing in agony and my partner said there was blood everywhere!

He acted quick and put her in a basket and rushed her to the vets. She had tore off her claw and exposed her very sensitive bit of her toe, my partner said she was really squealing at the vet with her mouth wide open while she had it looked at and cleaned with a special alcohol solution. How she didnt bite him is a mystery!

Anyway vet cleaned her up and checked her over after the horiffic ordeal and said she is a fine specimen of a guinea pig and how they should be looked after despite her missing claw! He said it should grow back within 2-3 months so its all good news now.

She came home and slept like a little baby, poor mite must of been so tired and overwhelmed.

Just a warning really, doubt she'll be jumping up on the platform like an irish dancer anytime soon! -c

Ouch - That's horrible. Your partner did the right thing there. Keep a close eye on the wound (it should look clean and be cool to the touch) and keep the cage extra clean as I have has a guinea get an infection in a damaged nail bed in the past.

My Gimmick ripped her claw out last year, lot of blood, but it stopped bleeding really fast. She didn't squeak, she just went really quiet and puffed right up. Took her to the vets, who didn't prescribe her pain killers grrrr. She was in so much pain the next day. Got her some pain killers after that as she stopped eating and drinking and just sat there all day. Poor lady.

I will mention though, that was like 4 months ago. And it doesn't look like her claw will ever grow back. She doesn't seem bothered, her foot looks a little odd though lol!

Gimmick ripped her claw out on one of the C&C mesh panels.

She might be frightened to put weight on it for a good few weeks, even though it's healed, don't be too worried if it takes a few weeks for her to bear weight on it fully again. I would still monitor that she at least uses it a little. She'll be fine though. It took Gim 3-4 days to get over the pain.

I know what you are going through though. If you want to ask anything about it, drop me a PM :).

Poor thing! My pig Linney also managed to rip off one of her nails a few months back... she got it caught in the bars as she was jumping back into the cave. Not much noise and it didn't seem to hurt her much, but there was a ton of blood! We just checked to make sure it was clean and not hot/infected... about five months later she is just starting to regrow a nail on that toe. Hope Harriet makes a full recovery very soon! Linney definitely empathizes with her!

oooh it all sounds gruesome...i keep thinking about my lads when they leg it round the cage at 100 miles an hour stoppppp slow down, but they wont.

and my dogs when they run round the field 100 miles an hour eeek slow down

:{

Vet didnt prescribe her painkillers, not sure if thats normal?

She is quite cautious around her sisters and while normally being the bolshy one out the group she certainly avoiding confrontation and there has been less squabbling since the incident. The day after she did it she didnt make very many noises the next day, but i wasnt surprised to be honest, she was probably traumatised.

The cage is super clean right now, dont want a trip back there and disturb her even more (unless needed). Just feel like she needs lots of cuddles but trying not to spook her too much, she seems happy to chill out in the hidey till she's got her attitude back.

Thanks to your kind words, am sure Harriet appreciates it! :-)

Bit like the Grand Prix when they start :(|) When two of my boars start a race, the two next door start as well so I'm boss eyed watching them. As you say, amazing they don't hurt themselves. Our little girl who lives above the boys has clocked on now so she starts popcorning (thinks she's a cheerleader I suspect) so have to contend with her bouncing around sideways as well :{
Brilliant to see them all so happy though :(|) but I worry they will crash into something one day the speed they go up and down their ramps. Thank goodness my OH fitted little rails on them :...
