I got 2 new sister girls today, from a girl my friend works with, she got them as babies & has had them for approx 2 months. She wanted a dog but lives in a flat so got 2 g.p's & quite obviously didn't want them so i said i'd have them.

They were quite literally thrown at me on the doorstep. >:(

I am fuming mad. Alex (the girl who brought them) asked her b/f "have you brought the antibiotics?" He hadn't! When i asked who was on antibiotics & why............
She pointed in the box, laughing "she bit her, she went scabby, then she bit her & now she's scabby!"

When I asked who was who, she pointed at them "marge & maggie then said oh no it's the other way round"
I don't think to be honest she could give a stuff!
I asked what veg do they eat, i was told cabbage, carrot & then oh they eat all veg - yeah right!

After bringing the piggies, cage, shavings, food into the house I had a look at them, one piggy, the smallest one has no hair right across her nose but no open wound now.

The bigger piggy has a bite wound behind one ear (it has scabbed). I'm assuming this is the one on antibiotics.
They're now separated & in my kitchen. I daren't put them in the same room as my piggies just incase they're not bite marks.
Tho' they can't stay there :-\

I've bathed the wound with salt water & can see that an old wound mark near her eye, the hair is just growing back. I sent a text asking which one was the "top pig" she thought it was the smaller of the two as this one had been mounting the other & always bagged the house.

The only other thing i've noticed is like white stuff on their ears, near the ends - a bit like salt petre on your shoes, does anyone know what this is?

Eventhough they've inflicted wounds on each other does this mean they may be fine with other piggies? If they won't individually join any of my piggies i will have to rehome them :(

Here i go again - "psycho pigs" abound in this house ;D

All advice welcomed :)

Re: 2 New Girls - Advice Needed

How large was the cage they were in? If it was small it very well could be that there wasn't much space and so they were stressed and fought. Have you sexed them to make sure their sexes are accurate? After I know those two things I can probably be of more help.

Hi Kimmie,

They are def girls, that was the first thing i looked at & their cage is a rabbit cage, exactly the same as this one

Oh dear you do pick them eh ;)
Poor little babies no wonder they were fighting each no room to move :( :o
You're doing all the right things, best of luck with them, i'm sure with the love and attention you give them they will be more easily handled in a few weeks. Keep us posted love and well done again O0 :-*

Re: 2 New Girls - Advice Needed

Maybe they were just stressed out and fighting over food or something if they weren't cared for correctly. Try to introduce them again and they may bond. I've had to do that many times. Two were surrendered and separated because they constantly fought, but that was because they were kept in two shoeboxes put together! He got a travel cage and tried that but they still fought. Once they were in a nice sized cage they formed one of the strongest bonds I've seen. Maybe that's what happened with them.

I think that may be it, i have 2 of everything for my pairs & have had no probs really. I will try them again in a large run & see what happens & thanks :)

OMG 2 shoeboxes! These 2 are lucky in comparison. People amaze me, where the hell is common sense?! >:(

Re: 2 New Girls - Advice Needed

They had a hole in each of them and were taped together. Unbelievable. But I'm stealing the spotlight now (sorry!)
Your new additions are gorgeous, but poor things with those wounds! I'm glad they're with you now. If only there was a way we could tell them it's going to be alright from now on.

Awwww they're just beautiful Niki :-* :-*
An extra for that poor little nose :-* :-* :-* gosh it must've been painful that's quite a scar there :(

Re: 2 New Girls - Advice Needed

What you mentioned about the ear sounds like it 'could' be a fungal infection to me :-\ Where are you Nikki I am about ready to take on a couple more piggies that need nursing ready for their forever homes!
I have some shampoo from the CCT that (if you are close enough) could have. Have a look at the skin in other places if it seems like it has a white tidal wave then it quite possibly is fungal. If you gently pull at hair in an infected area & it comes out without any force then its fungal for sure.

The second pictured pigs nose is an odd shaped wound for a bite because of it being so long - but I suppose that if the other pig decided to get its teeth either side of its nose & the other pig pulled back that might make that shape wound.

I think it would be good to give them both a bath anyway & it may help with rebonding them.

I rather like the first pig - she reminds me a bit of my Willow.
Good luck, if you need any help just yell - oh & a beautiful neutered boy to keep these 2 in line I think Wiggy would look splendid with them once they're better >:D

Re: 2 New Girls - Advice Needed

It could be ringworm Niki, looking at the wound across poor Emeline's nose. I would take them both to the vets and get them checked over for mites, lice etc and then bathe them with either GG stuff or alphosyl perhaps.

Good Luck!

ps... Briar is stunning! :smitten:

Awww, how could anyone not want them. They're stunning! :smitten:
Good on you for taking them in.

Re: 2 New Girls - Advice Needed

There are no signs of fungal at all - i know what this looks like as i battled with my W's for weeks last year, Beks will remember ;) Also no signs of mites or lice - no hair missing (Wallace had the typical V last year & there are no wrigglers). They are in excellent health except for Emelines bald nose & Briars bite behind her ear, which since i bathed it in salt water yesterday is healing lovely. I rubbed some Cocoa Butter onto their ears yesterday & so far no signs of white stuff :-\

However, I really am out of my depth today. :( I'm glad i took them from their previous owner but i'm too much of a wimp to cope with the behaviour. :(

Emeline is a manic! She challenged both my sows & seemed to mean business. Ester sat in corner chattering her teeth, Esme who's older retaliated full on. I had to dive in before there was all out war. (They were introduced in a 3 x 4 C & C)
I then put her with Bijou & Howie all well for approx 10 mins then she made 2 jumps, all 4 feet off the floor & launched herself mouth wide open at Howie - he went mental! Yet again i had to take her out & put her back in her cage.

I can't cope with them fighting - it upsets me too much, i feel like :'( - yes i know i'm a wimp.

Briar was fine with Howie & Bijou until i put them into their hutch, Howie went to sleep, Bijou chased, nipped, chased, nipped, poor Briar was squealing so loud, stuck in a corner literally shaking from head to foot. I had to take her out.
I then made a 3 x2 c & c-a small space so they could sort it out but nowhere to be cornered. Chasing, nipping (all Bijou) again but settled down after 20 mins - back into the hutch & off it went again - this hutch is in my bedroom & i can't have squeals all night so i took Briar out again.

She's now in with Esme & Ester; Esme's been grooming her, Esters chasing/nipping but nothing like Bijou.
I'm hoping she will accept her & then she can stay but Emeline will have to be re-homed. She's on top of the chest freezer in the kitchen but can't stay there.

I think she needs a neutered boar who can put her in her place - Howie's just too laid back or too old to be bothered.

Thank you for your kind offer Hils regarding the shampoo - do you think i should treat them anyway?

Re: 2 New Girls - Advice Needed

Hasn't Hills got a lonely neutered boar, perhaps they could be rehomed together?

I'm not sure, a good bath might calm them down a bit at least - it worked well with my swamp pigs who were being as grumpy! I know how you feel at the moment with things not going to 'plan' with bonding etc. I'd keep them away from your lovelies for fear of an injury. These little madams who come from these sorts of situations are like little getto girls who'll fight anything & need a bit of time & patience to settle down & learn their manners - where is Jeremy Kyle when we need him!

Yep, as Kayjay said I do have 2 neutered males looking for laydeez. Wiggy is the more dominant & feisty Rusty is def the more timid ;)

Emeline is the "ghetto girl" Briar is the submissive one; towards other piggies anyway. Emeline definitely needs a feisty boar to put her in her place, she frightened me to death yesterday! :o

Kate has v.kindly offered to take them for which i am so grateful for. I am not emotionally equipped for such behaviour :(

Good on you for taking them in in the first place Niki. It can be so hard when these little critters don't behave themselves, just remind yourself you did the right thing taking them in. Good luck to Kate, hope these babies manage to find a new forever home soon. x

Beks is very kindly picking up the little ladies for me tomorrow.

We'll keep you all informed how they are doing of course.

Beks collected them tonight :)
I bathed them together last night, let them have a run around for an hour before putting them in the same cage together.  I'm happy to say i heard no squeals, hopefully they'll stay that way & find their new forever home together :)
