20 Feet of Space

I have recently moved house and now have a massive garden. I will try and explain it so you can have a mental picture.

You go out the back door and on to a large patio. From the centre of the patio to the end of the garde is a path. Either side is grass and on one side is a brick built shed / workshop. After the grass the last section of the garden is split in to two section. A veggie patch on the left and a large empty space on the right.

The grass on the right is going to be turned in to a patio / BBQ area.

Now with the spare space at the end I would like to do something for my anaimls. I am going to get either a 6 foot by 6 foot or 8 foot by 8 foot shed to go on there for the animals (insulated). And I was thinking about fencing in the rest of the area a bit like a bird house, tall sides with a mesh top and door in to it. This way it stops any birds landing in there and keeps the dog out of it.

The total size of the area I have to play with is 20 foot by 20 foot.

Its going to be an ongoing project to probably get finished easter next year. Budget is not really an issue as I can get supplies like the wood, mashing and so on at a decent price and know two builders who are more than happy to help me do the work in reture for beer and snacks.

Oh and there is proper electrics down there so a light in the shed, even a heater and outside lights will be easy. (Have someone willing to do that too).

So I am looking for ideas on how to arrange and what to do with the space. Should I just grass it all or have a slabbed area in the pen too? Should I look in to getting large plastic tubes and sort of putting them in there then placing dirt over the top to form a sort of hill and then grass that to give different levels and so on?

Or the other option is to do the large walk in bird house idea with the shed there too but split the remaining area inside the large bird house thing in to lets say three sections so my current pair of bores can have one section leaving two free sections for more guinea pigs, maybe offer foster homes to some or something like that. With a 6 to 8 foot square insulated / heated shed I would have ample room for hutches or could even go for proper stacking hutches.

I don't know what to do really. I have the space, the time to do it, people willing to help and the money to do it but I don't know what to do. Should I look in to making it sort of a mini rescue able to accomodate others or should I leave it for my two bores to have the whole lot.

Any ideas most appreciated. Thanks

PS sort of poor map of the garden below.

Oh I wish I could have that area for my buns and pigs.
Cover the area like a "walk-in aviary" is a good idea, keeps the birds and cats out and the piggies safe from attack.

I personally would have a concrete slab to put the hutches and shed on...easier for cleaning and levelling. I'd also have a big run attached so they have the grass to roam around.
If you want to do some fancy work with the tubes and grass over it - hm, thinking of catching the piggies to go to bed at night....you might have to end up in the tube to chase them.

Stacking hutches is great if you want to expand your brood ... remember though, going from two piggies to more they will cost more to feed and more time to clean out etc.

Fostering is a great idea if you are able to hand the piggies over to new people to look after them permanently. Some people are just not able to give up piggies.

Thanks for the reply.

Humm yes did not think about getting them out the tubes at night LOL good point, may have to think about that.

The base of the shed is an excellent idea so thanks for that :)

As for fostering. Its something I need to think about. I don't think I would have too many issues handing them over after their time with me. About 5 years ago we use to foster reptiles, ones that had been abused, not looked after and so on. It was hard work but very rewarding. We stopped when we moved areas and to be honest as much as I enjoyed what I did, reptiles are often not the sort of pets you can have a cuddle with (well some you could).

I am in a lucky situation with time on my hands and a pet budget that would allow (including unexpected vets bills) the extra outgoings. OK I could not afford as many as like 20 or so but I could manage up to lets say 10 additional guinea pigs, if thats what I chose to do.

I need to learn more about guinea pigs first. I know the basics, I can care for them but for my own personal piece of mind I would like to learn more first which is why I am making this an ongoing project and not looking at moving anything in the the area till next year.

Thanks again for the reply.

I am going to say in my personal opinion i would keep my piggies closer to the house...
You are less likely to get animal intruders if they are by the house as it is too close for comfort for some and you can also hear better if anything does happens and get out there quicker...

I have just laid a patio at the back of my garden for us humans as the rabbits wendyhouse has accomodated the patio at the back door...!

Also a few people get second hand dog kennels (with the runs) to house their buns etc in you can get good ones on ebay cheap...

Also a good idea is to lay a sheet of steel wire on the bottom of the enclosure before turfing... that way nothing can dig underneath and into the enclosure and also pad locks!

your garden and plans sound fantastic, keep us updated i would love to see it when its finished!x

i'd say keep to just your two piggies, see how they get on. it may wreck their relationship having other piggies around. keep us updated! x
