Update: No better today, not feeling his normal self, found him dribbling this afternoon before feeding him, wasn't interested in food or water. Decided to take him to the vets. Took him to the hospital this evening. Told the vet there about everything, even about what the other vet on Monday said (his teeth isn't that serious, just need to feed him up)..........How wrong she was!!
The vet at the hospital looked in his month and said it is serious. So he is there over night (will be given injections and feed) and will have his teeth trimmed under anaesthetic tomorrow morning.

If you read this, say a little prayer for my sweet Cookie and hopefully he will pull through.

Cookie stayed at the vets over night, had his op this morning and he woke up fine :). The vets said his teeth was in a bad state and noticed he had been eating on one side of his mouth and they think there maybe another problem where he had his eye removed. But they don't know for definate.

I have put him in a separate cage with hay and treats to see how much he eats over night. He has already drank some water from his bottle my his self :)

He is going to the vets tomorrow morning for a post op check up. Now its up to him to decide if he wants to eat properly and stop his teeth from growing.
 
I'm glad Cookie has recovered well and I'm sure you feel so much better knowing that he's home safe and sound.
 
Today he has only ate abit of apple and lettuce. Not touched the hay, grass or crit care that i rolled up in little balls.
He has been hiding away in his bed most of the day.

Is it best to keep syringe feeding him the Crit care? Is it normal for a guinea to still be off his food after the teeth trimming op? How can i force feed him hay/grass?
 
I would continue syringing critical care until he is eating for himself and eating what he normally eats. It can be quite normal for a piggie to be off their food for a day or so after their teeth have been trimmed as the mouth may be sore. Do you know if your piggie was given a pain killer after the trimming? If your piggie doesn't eat much overnight then mention it to the vet and they can give him a painkiller via injection. I wouldn't force him anything he doesn't want to eat. Put some softer food in for him like cucumber, kiwi, melon, etc but leave the firmer stuff in as he might change his mind. If he is separate fron his cage mates I would put him back in with them as he might be a bit stressed not being with them. Hand feed him food if you can to make he is eating it and not his cage mates. Good foods to continue feeding him are dark green veg like savoy cabbage, broccoli stalk (not too much) and plenty of hay. Apparently these foods take ages to chew up and swallow so his teeth will be working loads.
 
I'm so pleased the surgery went well. Dr was off his food for some days after having teeth done. I would continue to syringe for now.
 
He is just nibbling at food today. And when he walks he is all hunched up and soooo tiny/boney. Been outside in the run with his bro today, but mainly huddled in the corner :(
If there is something else wrong connecting to the sugery on his eye (which was done back in Feb), its probably best for him to be put to sleep :( 8...
 
Aw i really hope Cookie starts to eat up soon, its awful when they're not themselves you feel so helpless. Dont think about putting him to sleep yet, he's giving it his best shot and all isn't lost yet, give him a chance first. One thing i found amazing for boosting apetite wen one of mine wasnt eating was metatone tonic. You can buy it pretty cheap in tesco and asda etc, it comes in a big bottle. Just give 0.5mls via syringe into the mouth once a day. I think its ok to give for about a week. Mine loved the taste so it wasnt hard getting it into him, i'd give it a try if i were you. If he's looking skinny and weak it may be worth giving a vitamin C suplement, mine love the orange flavoured ones from asda they chew them themselves. Half of one into the mouth once a day. Sorry if this has already been said just trying to think what may help. Give him some grass if you can too, that seemed to kick start mine into eating some veg aswell and it will be easy for him to chew. Really hope he improves soon.

I agree totally with jnenbnb. My piggie also loved the vitamin c from asda. Feed it direct but don't put it in his water. During the last month or so of my sow's life I syringed her critical care as she was old and could not always manage to get to her food bowl. It wouldn't be a problem to continue the critical care until you feel he has put on a good amount of weight through eating himself. What you've got to remember is that he has had surgery on his teeth and he may be feeling a bit rough of a couple of days. My piggie had a corneal ulcer before she passed away and one vet said it was connected with her teeth which I didn't believe as she had had dental problems a long time before the ulcer. I took her to a different vet who said they were completed unconnected. After a month's treatment the ulcer healed itself. I'm not saying your vet isn't knowledgable. I'm just saying that vets are not right all of the time. He's just had his teeth done. Give him the chance over the next couple of weeks. You might be surprised how different he is in himself :)
 
Since last night he has spirits have picked up :D. Put some lettuce (not iceberg), grass and carrot leaves and he ate these overnight. This morning i fed him crit care (he was very excited!). Also all day he has been out on the grass in the run with his bro and has been happily munching also caught him eating some spouts and more carrot leaves in his cage! Hopefully he has turned a corner. But he is still going to the vets this fri for another check up.
Still weighing him and he is still around the 800g mark.

All of us here at Little Brambles are willing him to get better.

It's an anxious and upsetting time for you I know but one good day can often be followed by another and then another and before you know it you'll have a regular little piggy eating you out of house and home.

Give him a cuddle from us all xx He sounds like quite a fighter to me :)
 
He is a true fighter.

Its been since Sunday night that he has been eating well. Not touching hay though and only eats grass if he is outside on the grass in the run. The things he is eating are Brocoli, apple, leafy lettuce (not iceberg), biscuit treats, gerty (i have introduced him to supreme science, but ignores it, he has had gerty for 4 years now) and spouts.

Can guineas eat sweetcorn on the cob? Also He is off to the vets tomorrow morning for a check up. Where his eye was there is a lump developing, which could be the abscess returning. So there may be more trouble times ahead.
 
Update:
Took Cookie to the vets today after a great improved week! The only problem is where his eye was. A lump has formed (eye shaped). Anyways, the vet weighed him, he has put on weight, she looked at the lump and i asked what was wrong before his eye was removed and she said there was a tumour behind it. She thinks it is returning again. So all i got to do is give him metacam, continue to monitor him that he is still having a good quality of life. If the lump gets worse then he will have to be pts :(.
 
Its will be the absolute last resort for me too :).
He has not given up hope. Cos if he had he wouldn't have turned his eating habbits around from not eating anything and being quiet to how he is now.....munching away most of the day. :).
He is just an amazing little fighter :)
 
So glad he's doing well :) really hope the lump doesn't cause him any more trouble and he carries on getting better. Well done for getting him were he is now!

Cookie is still doing well. :). But yesterday noticed he has a big scab on his side where he has been scratching. I have just checked on him and he has made it bleed and its very red. I have put some quick recovery cream on it and wrapped his foot with a little bandage to cover his claws.

I have noticed lately he has been itching alot, but checked his skin and there is no mites, so he more than likely needs a bath. Will have to do that when his wound is healed.
 
Good to hear that cookie is doing better. If he has got mites you will not be able to see them with the naked eye. Mites need to be treated by the vet. It is possible that he has mites as they can multiply when a piggy is under the weather....
Worth getting it checked out.
 
Lice you can see, Mites you cannot. If he has Mites, like Laure says, he needs treatment from the vet. Bathing won't get rid unfortunately.
 
Took Cookie and his bro (Weet Weet) to the vets yesterday and they were both weighed (Cookie has gained weight) and they were both given injections for the mites. I will have to take them back in 10 days if they are still scratching.
Also i was given a liquid to bathe Cookie's wound and its scabing over nicely, hopefully he will leave it alone to heal.

Cookie is still not eating hay, but is eating grass. I am still feeding him Critical Care as he is not eating grass.
 
how much were the injections for the mites?
 
Well, all together i paid £8.50 but that included the liquid to bathe Cookies scab and metacam. So injections can't be too expensive.

Still noticed his poos are still unformed (not normal sauages). How do i get him pooing properly?
He has started nibbling hay. He eats his gerty food (tried science selective, but doesn't touch it). He also eats apple, brocoli, grass, green leaf lettuce and critical care twice a day. What else can i offer him to get poopies back to normal?
