my little baby peruvian yumyum pudding was looking really skinny under her huge fur coat and i noticed her spine feeling really prominant..
i took her to the vets today who said he had lost half her body weight since last time (last year) shes not 1 1/2 lb and that her mite problem was due to stress...
i bathed her in anti mite stuff th other day but now..they are back and app its stress...her cage mate is literally now twice her size 3lbs but has no mites....
ive seprated them both but shes looking really sad and listliss..its making me sad..what can i do?
how can i get her "beefed" up?

<3 <3

have you checked her teeth at all?slanted front teeth or broken or exaggerated ear movements indicates back teeth problems, never let any vet cut the front teeth with out first checking the back teeth xx

if there over grown at the back the loose weight, have problems eating can get a wet under chin, also if its mites she and the other guinea will need ivermec 3 treatments 1 every 7 days for 3 weeks to kill the mites.

how is she eating?

if she is struggling you will need to syringe feed her.but you must get her back teeth checked..if she isnt eating right if she is left she will die if its teeth problems, get some excel pellets pour boiling water over them so it covers the pellets wait 15 mins then add more water -until the pellets will not hold anymore water, wait 15 mins again and them mix into a smooth paste, get a 1ml syringe and feed with that make sure the pellets are cool before giving xx

mites can make them very ill too and can kill them so its important she has ivermec treatment as in my last post this needs to be given at the vets but she and your other one even if she has no signs of them will need the 3 treatments even if the vet only give 1 treatment ask to rebook for the other 2 as some vets dont tell you this x

thanks claire, the vet checked her teeth with a mocroscope thing and theres no problems, no lumps or wierd growths anywhere either.
the other guinea pigs including her cage mate have never had any problem with mites..its just her..ive got the ivemec stuff already and my vet gave her another tube and charged me £5 for the pleasure! I'm watchig her eat now..she does with no ovious discomfort..but just not very much..a bit like a bird! if she doesnt put on weight in 4 weeks have been told she needs xrays..ulp..i really dont know why shes stressed, i get her out everyday..keep her clean, trimmed and brushed..the only thing i can think of is her getting annoyed at me telling her all my problems! because i am that cool!
:D

no actual sign of the mites them selves but shes got a couple of little scabs on her back where shes been scratching and has lost the hair around it.. :( :(

Has you vet checked whether it could be fungal/systemic fungal? Has she been wormed? Has your vet checked her back teeth fully? Has she been checked for sores/rush in her mouth?

Have you been monitoring her eating? Is she eating/drinking normally or is she eating very slowly, nibbling/letting things fall out of her mouth again? Is she eating all her foods (including hay)?

Such a big weight loss does not happen overnight and is very unusual for guinea pig of her age. I simply cannot see how such a big weight loss can be caused only by mites without the mites not affecting her mates and causing major hairloss. I would rather think that, if anything, mites have appeared in an already weakened guinea pig.

Mites need to be treated at least three times with ideally 10 days between treatment in order to catch the eggs in the skin. All guinea pigs in a group need to be treated for mites, as they usually spread quickly.

Are you weighing your piggies weekly if healthy/daily if ill? I would strongly recommend that you do as you pick up on health problems much earlier this way. http://www.guinealynx.info/weigh.html

Here is a list of possible causes for weight loss/loss of appetite:

If she is still losing weight, you may need to syringe feed her. Start with soaked pellets and get some Critical Care or Science recovery from your vet.
