My piggie sam just had an operation for Malocclusion, the first time they've been so bad. What can i do to help prevent this again, what i can i expect in the future and how can i help generally. I've been on guinea lynx and others but i wanted a personal point of view. thanks all :)

I make my piggies work for their food. For example, I give then chucky carrot, chunky turnip, whole broccoli and corn on the cob now and again. It keeps their teeth sharp. I've had the teeth checked by vet after Bug died.

I have even soaked chew toys in their favourite foods to encourage them to chew.

Also I have bought toys that they can play with and chew. One was a natural wood tree which they could pull and chew on.

But in your case extra vigilance would help even more. Is there any way you can have the teeth filed with out anethestic?

Nice to see you back, not seen you in a while!

What was the particular problem with Sam's teeth? Malocclusion just means the teeth not wearing effectively, but more info on whether it's occurred before, which teeth were affected, what his symptoms were, whether he is eating independently etc. will help. :)

HI!

I've had exams and computer issues so not been on much. 8:)
His teeth were growing over his tongue and was finding it very hard to eat. He was losing some weight and showing signs of pain. The night before he went off his cucumber, bad sign. He still hasn't completely come round after his operation, its never taken this long before. He is eating but still not moving around as much as normal, he had his operation at around 3pm yesterday. They filled down his teeth and evened them up. I just hate the idea of him going threw this time and again...

Ok, that info does help.

Whereabouts are you? There may be a good vet or rodentologist nearby who could do dental work without anaesthetic - that way if routine dental work does turn out to be necessary, there's not the risk of anaesthetic to worry about.

Is he eating as much as normal, and drinking?

The teeth will overgrow very quickly if he doesn't start eating within a week.

Also sometimes the teeth are a secondary problem something happens first to stop them eating and then you get the teeth problem.
Agree with others you need a vet who does with out GA but they are few and far between, good luck.

I'm near Glasgow, not had joy finding one who'll do it with out :(
Hes still not right yet. He wont drink (that ive seen) but he is starting to eat. He still seems dazed and wobbly so i might call the vet later to get advice. I don't know what they used on him (he was fine after the last operation to remove an abscess) I think his teeth are still a bit sore. I'm helping with water a veg so hopefully he'll be ok soon. I want to avoid this again if possible.
I don't think there's another problem but ill keep a close eye...

Has he got painkillers otherwise you could use calpol 0.5ml, and dakarin[wrong spelling] for his mouth might make it a bit easier for him to eat.

Hes doing a lot better now, hes out and about and eating hay right now. Nearly cried when he did lol He got pain killers yesterday but i have calpol here which i'll use if need be. Thanks all :)

Glad to hear he is on the mend. Work his teeth and just be vigilant xx
