4 babies born on Friday. Mum in good health no worries before the birth.
Checked mum on Saturday small scab on her neck treated with Aloe vera gel.
Went to see mum this morning hair missing right down back, looks like she has been itching it as it is scabby, more gel applied.
Hmm what can i do?
Haven't been using mite/flea spot as she was pregnant.
Will she have picked up mites, if so where from as she has never had them before, will she pass whatever it is onto her babies?
:^- can I treat mum now as she is feeding the babies, can I treat the babies?
Any help please

I'm sure someone will come along with more info but I'd suggest contacting a piggie savy vet and get some advice.

Hi hang in there, there are lots of knowledgeable people on here, someone will be along soon to help. Hope all works out well for you. x

Sorry, pigpig, but it looks very much like mange mites!

There is a form of ivermectin which you can treat young guinea pigs with, xeno50, but I don't know from when you can treat babies and nursing mother.

Mites can be foumd anywhere on a pig, not just on the head and neck.
I would not treat her with Ivomec in 3 weeks time, unless the babies have been taken away from her.
Many sows do have thinning hair or hair loss after giving birth.
In the first instance I would make sure she has plenty of food to eat and, if possible, take her away from the babies for a few minutes once or twice a day, providing they don't object too much!
This should, hopefully, reduce her stress level and give her a chance to rest.

Welcome to the forum, mcr. I am glad the birth of the babies went well.

As AP said, some sows do have significant hair loss towards the end of the pregnancy and after the birth. Sometimes this is down to mites, sometimes it is hormonal.
Mites can sometimes come off the hay, but it has been said that the stress of giving birth can trigger an outbreak of mites.

You do have to be careful about treatment, but as she is developing scabs it does suggest she is scratching - the irritation needs to be soothed, at the very least. How often are you applying the Aloe Vera?

You could try contacting Chrissie at Gorgeous Guineas, she's very experienced with guinea pig skin problems and may have some safe products that will help soothe the skin, given your sows particular circumstances.
