I have a quad of all female pigs and we have been offered a lone pig whos friend died and I'm wondering if they could live happily in a 5 or will they need a male?

I think it could be fine.I have 5 girls and was worried about introducing the newest 2 to my bonded 3 but they all get on fine. Its worth a shot to see if they get on x

You could try it. There is never a "need" for a male but I think a male sometimes calms down the squabbles. The male doesn't fit into the hierarchy though so there would still be dominance behaviours etc

Ok thank you

I think it always depends on the piggies in question.
But the lone piggy will be far better off with friends, so it sounds like it is worth a try to see if she will bond with your group.

I've had groups of female from pairs up to a group of 16, so it's definitely possible as long as the bonding it done correctly. I have 5 sows now but also a neutered boar with them.

I've done many successful and unsuccessful group bondings. It always depends on the personalities of the piggies involved.
