Hi! In short, my boars had a scrap today and were locked together in a piggie circle seemingly biting eachother and now I've separated them. As I pulled one of them off of the other the other was hanging on by its teeth! I have no idea what to do now.

For background info - I've had my boars for two months now and they're both nearing 6 months. The more dominant pig is Raisin, and the other Bumble. When I first got them there was maybe a week or a few days of vying for dominance but it eventually settled down - there were never any scuffles and all has been relatively calm since. They live in a 150cmx90cm C&C cage and have 3 hideys (with 2+ entrances), 2 bowls, 2 water bottles and several tunnels. Today I put them out for floortime whilst I cleaned their cage, and a few hours after placing them back into their cage the usually submissive Bumble was all fluffed up, teeth chattering & rumble strutting for quite some time even though Raisin had done nothing but lay in his own hidey snoozing. After 15 minutes of this and Raisin doing nothing, he began doing the same until Bumble began chasing Raisin around the cage. Then Raisin began retaliating and they were caught together in what resembled a big fluffy ball of hatred as they appeared to be actually biting eachother in a circle so I intervened with oven mitts. As I pulled one of them off of the other the other was hanging on by its teeth! I've checked them each over (difficult given they are the most wriggly pigs ever) and no blood has been drawn only a little fur pulled out so I currently have them in their original cage with a mesh divider inbetween. I'm unsure what to do next. Please help!

Because there has been no blood drawn (that I can see, though obviously a hanging piggy does suggest teeth were sunk into something), am I fine to reintroduce them? Should I do this tonight or tomorrow? Should I clean the entire cage again before doing this? They have had a little chatter to each other through the mesh but otherwise have ignored each other completely.

Many thanks :-)

@tinwins I usually try again. I'd give them an overnight stay in separate cages to let them calm down.

Once they've fought then it's unlikely that they'll bond but it can happen.

I know it's recommended to start the bond in a neutral area but if I've had an unsuccessful attempt I try my second attempt in the cage that they'll live in. Then any issues will show straight away and you're not stuck watching them for hours and then a fight starts when they're moved into the cage.

If it's a cage that one of them is in now is there any chance that you could keep them both out of it overnight?

Give it a really good clean so it doesn't smell like home to either of them and clean/swap out any hideys that they're used to.

Good luck!

6 months is the worst age for those raging hormones. I've just gone through the same sort of experience with 2 of my boars, the reintroduction was not successful. They are living side by side in a divided cage, they look for each other if one is out of the cage for any reason and get quite upset if they can't find their 'friend', there is no dominance behaviour with the divider. It seems they are one of those pairs who can't live together - can't live apart.

I do hope you have better luck with the reintroduction than I did.

They are at the hormonal stage when anything can set them off. Boars don't do well at cage cleaning time as it triggers their dominance behaviours. I tend to put something back in (a fleece or vet bed for instance) that still has their smell on.
Separate them tonight but keep them close by. Reintroduce on neutral territory as if starting from scratch ( read bonding threads tonight) and hopefully it will work. Possibly they will have to stay apart until they mature a bit and hormones settle
