6 year old Boar very lonely following loss of partner

I don't have experience in this, and can see you have got some fab advice from Merab, but just wanted to say you are such a caring owner and really doing the right thing by your little Waffle. If he does go to the senior boy herd I am sure he is going to have a fab retirement and make lots of new piggie friends. I can't imagine how horrible it must be to 'surrender' your little baby, but instead of 'surrendering' it might help to think of it more as he is your friend moving away onto pastures new! He will always remember you and is lucky to have been in your care, sending big hugs x

Hi there, I just wanted to say how sorry I am for your loss @esmepickle and thank you for doing all you can for Waffle. Your post and the replies above were extremely helpful to read. We have a lonely 5.5 year old boar on his own, recently bereaved. I really hope you guys have a happy ending 💗
Oh what a shame, I'm so sorry for your dear old boy, and for you. I don't suppose I realised these potential pitfalls when getting the boys 6 years back, so I have learned alot, about Guinea Piggies and about myself...A rescue/sanctuary have agreed to give him a retirement home with their herd of senior boars, which appears to be the best option available. They both continue to make it to a good old age. Very best wishes to you :) xx

This is so kind of you, I really appreciate your guidance. Yes actually I have been considering it from the perspective that he (and Oreo) were with me and I cared for them when they needed me. I will forever be grateful that I had them in my life I have been blessed. I really do now see what he needs, and I am hopeful he will have that ahead of him. I wish you well and thankyou for engaging 💞

So who does he live next to now? 💐
If this one's for me - just to say we are a little under 2 weeks recently bereaved. So Morty is on his own for now.... he is getting lots of attention and has soft toys for comfort. His run is in our front room so he's very much at the centre of our family. I am a mess after losing his companion Toffee and need some time before I can make any decisions

Its an emotional time, I knew I would be so upset when Oreo died, but I really wasn't prepared for how it affected me. I'm sorry for your loss. I couldn't stop going and stroking his little body, even though he was gone. We've buried him deep in our garden and planted a lovely shrub there. Our little Waffle still grieves, spending alot of time in his small wooden hut, even though I'm giving him all the enrichment that I can. He also goes on the grass in a big secure run. The other day I drifted off briefly with him cuddled on my lap. But I know that this isn't right for him, from his behaviour changes he needs companions of his own kind, and so he is scheduled to go and live at Potteries GPR with the senior boars in August. Breaks my heart not to have him, but I'm reassured its the right decision. If he was younger I would take on rescue piggies, but its complicated. I wish you and Morty well 💞
@CTWC thankyou so much for reaching out, I hope you're well xx

Thank you for your kind thoughts, I'm very sorry for your loss. We care for these guys very deeply don't we. They are really special animals. I'm pleased to say we've decided to adopt again, and we will have a similarly bereaved 5 year old joining Morty on Wednesday 🐾
