I know this is probably a dumb question but my guinea pig is now 7 years old and very slow and tired. I have been letting him hang out with my 2 year old female pigs just in the pen on the grass while I supervise. So far he rumblestruts but then just falls asleep. I wish i could let him live with the girls all the time but I guess he might still end up being a dad rightÉ

I guess I just feel sorry for him being alone most of the time.

What do you guys thinkÉ

Oopsied, thanked rather than replied!

Anyway, a boar is fertile for his whole life - so if he manages to 'do the deed' while you're not looking, he could well manage to make babies with your girls. Can you house him next to them so that he can be near them all the time and communicate with other piggies? That would be a way to keep him happy and with company.

Please do not mix your pigs again - hopefully it's not too late.

Guinea pigs do not not lose fertility with age, though the dangers increase dramatically for females. Sadly I have seen the consequences of 'Oh , the poor old thing, he'd love a bit of company to perk him up.' It's how I met one of the rescues earliest adopters - his sow had had the company of his boar in the last few days of his life, despite his age and failing health he had managed to get her pregnant. Toffee did not survive the failed birth due to dystocia - http://www.petmd.com/exotic/conditions/reproductive/c_ex_gp_dystocia#.T-AeVJFQ40k

Please don't risk it - a divide that they can see and chat to each other through if far better and you won't have to worry about the consequences.

okay thank you. I don't want anything to happen to my girls. I will keep them apart. Thanks.

I'm glad that you'll be careful and just let them sit beside each other, this will still be lovely company for them all x)x)x)
