Just been confirmed my new piggy has a heart murmur. She doesnt eat like her sisters and goes in the corner but very loving.

vet has put her on baytril and metacom. I'm also putting critical care and metatone tonic too. anything else can i do apart from lots of cuddles and loving.

Only got her wednesday..... very sad.

AWWW Bless. Is this treatable? What has the vet said more long term?

Poor girl....

take each day as it comes. she could pass tomorrow, in a few days, in a months just see what happens with meds. if they help then yippee. shes got alot to catch up when she is 420g, her sisters who are same age are 585g & 702g.

:( Thats very sad news, but it sounds like your doing a wonderful job of keeping her warm, cozy, happy and plenty of tlc! Hope she goes from strength to strength, keep holding on little one :)

Theres little you can do I'm afraid, just give her lots of cuddles and tlc, and who knows maybe she'll live not far off her friends. It all depends what grade mumur she has and loads of other things. There isnt much a vet can do I'm afraid, surgical intervention on such a small animal is almost impossible I'm afraid, let alone never done.

Good luck with her. Give her lots of cuddles from me.

I will echo furry friends as I have heart piggies - Fortekor (1mg/kg) and if necessary frusemide for fluid (2mg/kg) are the standard dosages.

See guinea lynx -

If necessary print out and take this page to your vet (like I did with my first suspected heart pig and she was 2.5 yrs old) -

Now my vets are very happy to do repeat precriptions and are pleased they too have learned something.

My heart piggies have had at least 6-12 months extra quality of life and are still going strong . They have no ill efeects from the meds and it has helped alleviate their symptoms,. I just give them their meds twice a day and know that I have to do this for life (and can;t afford to miss more than one day's dosage wthout ill effects).

Your youngster has a very good many (and happy) piggie years ahead of them with the right medications

HTH

Sorry to hear your little one has had this diagnosis Jacques, it does seem sad but there is definitely hope and things that can be done. With the right meds she has the chance to thrive and live life as a normal piggie, although she will need the meds for life.

I also have a 'heart pig', diagnosed through repeated pericarditis (fluid around the heart) and symptom workup, she has been on benazepril (the Fortekor furryfriends and Pebble mentioned) since March and is like a different pig. I can find her thread for you if you are interested?

Another one of mine is on a trial of heart meds - symptoms include dental problems, bumblefoot, inactivity, failure to thrive/gain weight amongst other things.

Just thought I would update you guys on my little girl with heart murmur. She has now put on 95g in 12 days and seems to be ok. She has been off meds (baytril & metacom) now since monday. However today she seems not her usually self so have given her some metatone tonic to boast her if not will go back to the vets armed with my list of meds to try.
