I was so scared i was going to watch them be ate alive!
Thats the third cat thats been on our garden but the 1st cat that has been on the garden when the guineas have been in the run!

It is a hutch with no top on , the person who gave it us can't find it :/ we've been meaning to go and get some netting stuff to put on the roof of the run but have not yet as we were so busy :( , I only went to put something in the bin and turned back around and there was a cat there at the run staring at me , it knew there was some sort of food for it there !

I ran outside and chased it off but it sat on the fence while I stood in the run next to the little hut thing that the guineas were lying down in they didnt have a clue what was going on , but thank god they didnt move! or theyd not be here now :( well and truely scared me , I was on my own too as my partners at work!

Cats will always be natural predators. Both my cats go outside and i have no clue what they do . You have to watch your pigs , otherwise the native predators will get them :0

I hate leaving mine unattended when they're out in the run- even though it has a roof- because our neighbours have nine (yes nine) cats! Earlier in the summer when my girls were in the hutch one actually jumped inside while I was stood there stroking Mabel! That was enough to pursuade me it was time for a C&C.
The only thing I can suggest is finding some chicken wire or something similar for protection when they're out, and maybe buying something like this for on top/around the run: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/5m-Anti-C...428?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item58945b315c.

Please dont leave pigs outside in runs with no tops on unattended, we do have birds of prey in the UK and even birds like crows and rooks can attack pigs (as one tried through my apex run). Its too much worry to leave them so exposed to natural preditors.

On the note of cats - hose pipes everytime you see them in the garden, it doesnt hurt them and it will teach them to think twice, I am surrounded by cats and they do come in, but not for long and certainly dissapear when I open the door

Thanks we are going to get some for the roof of it ! we dont but i just went inside to put something in the bin and turned around and there was a cat ! and nine cats :o why so many :P! horrible cats ! Not getting to my boys!

That really would be one too many near misses for me - a split second is all it takes and we've had some very sad stories on here in the past.
Please find something suitable to cover the pens with or don't put them outside, it is not worth it :(

We have some cover for it now , just like a netting but not where the cat could rip it and get in its good stuff, was only 10 pounds :) ,

I only say horrible as I was upset at the thought of a cat getting to my boys :( but that'll not happen anyway! wont let it :)

I am also prepared for when the next cat comes near them , ima grab the hose pipe and blast them! like you said pepperdog!

Put cat repellent on the fences, luckily, my neighbourhood doesn't have any cats!

When I had a pair guinea pigs as a child, they were free-ranging and one of them used to chase the cats out of the garden! Think he was particularly territorial. Foxes are a big risk in some areas as well.

A cat was stalking my piggies once. The boldest pig hid away until the cat was right by the run, then he ran out squeaking as loudly as he could. The cat scarpered and never came back!

I'd be more worried about dogs getting in tbh. A neighbour of mine has two terriers and they would definitely attack any guinea pigs they came across.

Please do not spray a cat with a hose pipe. At the end of the day, that is someone else's pet.

My cat once came home soaking wet where someone had obviously took it upon themselves to wet him (it was a lovely summers day). He was terrified and it took us a good few days to get him back to normal!

I am afraid this is the only effective way to deter them from the garden. When I was looking after foster lurchers they were not cat friendly at all and after doing the other more friendly tips (which dont work at all) to stop them coming in the garden I had two close calls, far too close for liking and I would rather a wet scared cat returns home than a very dead cat.

On this same note, I rather a wet cat than a dead pig.

And no I dont hate cats, I love them and grew up with them. Our tortie female took to waking my mum and dad up at 4am mewing to come inside at the top window which a previous female cat had slipped off the windowsil and nearly killed herself falling through the old greenhouse that used to be there (was removed). So three nights in a row she got water sprayed and never did it again, it didnt harm her, she wasnt upset or scared and she wasnt either going to slip off a dangerous position to be in. Lesser of two evils.

I completely understand where you are coming from, really I do.

My parents have a couple of cats who come in to their garden and they are really annoying especially using their garden as a toilet mallethead

I just think that owners of any pray animal should be responsible in keeping them safe.

When I was younger and lived at home, I had a rabbit and we used to let him free range in the garden. One time we noticed a cat jump over the wall and out of the garden. We ran outside and Casper who was a huge rabbit was unharmed. We never let him free range unsupervised again though.

I just get a bit defensive sometimes because Harrison has come home in some right states where other people have harmed him. Somebody had even taken it on themselves to kick him once and he was quite badly hurt.

no absolutely and I would hate for people to be hosing the poor cat down just for the sake of it, I usually managed with a warning shot, right near them and it was enough for some of them, just had a really stupid pair that thought hiding in the grass near the dog was the way to go and my god was it scarey when one time the dog got the cat by the tail, but thankfully let go when I shouted. Most of the time they scarper when they hear my door open which is fine for me, they know to make a sharp exit.

I do of course have fully enclosed runs and keep an eye on them when I can, heavy wooden ones at that - as long as the cats sit and watch, that is fine by my, but thinking lunch is being fattened up is not alright.

My parents have always had issues with unwelcome cats coming into their garden, and even their own cats going into other people's gardens (and houses! they have been found on several occasions having a snoop around various neighbour's bedrooms etc!). At the end of the day, they are just cats, they don't understand that they aren't allowed in other people's gardens etc. A little spray with a water pistol, or shaking some stones in a tin can is enough to get rid of them. My parents have seen one of their cats happily walking along the fence once, and then the neighbour hit her with a broom head and she lost her balance and fell badly, clearly there was no need for that.
That said, I do agree that small pet owners need to just be careful...you are never going to stop cats or other predators coming into your garden, like I said-they just don't understand that they aren't allowed to be there.

Or you could have a cat like mine, who thinks the pigs are his friends :))

I have two cats like this:)) but i dont like other cats coming in the garden even tho my pigs are housed securely. as cats hate water just a light spray with a water pistol is usually enough not a soaking with a hose. usually i dont have water to hand and have found fixing them with a stare and very slowly walking towards them works well too!

This is why my babies are inside pigglies!
We have foxes and there's cats too... and BIG birds that have already taken some of the smaller ones :0

I'd never harm any being person , animals, a cat!

I'm totally against any sort of abuse but i think a light spray like youve all said with water is more of a teaching method , sort of pschology really (want I'm doing at college at the moment ;) ) ,

I can put any stuff around our fences cos with our garden you can see all other houses around us and there gardens to cos were semi detached , so all our fences are there fences too if that makes sense so I dont think I'd be able too!, I wouldn't be suprised if some of them have cats too i know next door have a dog !

I have not yet seen a fox near us but my alex said he heard one outside at night ! guineas are kept in shed locked up with key at night ! , usually bring them out in day in hutch if weathers nice and warm and not too cold or windy!, or ill have shed door open if its not too warm so they still get some fresh air, so they should be safe out gate is locked too and bolted but if foxes jump and cats and can get into the hutch then mallethead but as its coming to winter i think ill keep them in shed abit more if we are out so no cats can try and get in the hutch!

I left the front doors to my cage open last night (you know, since I was sat RIGHT THERE) and my cat jumped in there. He wasn't after the pigs though, who were in the upper level. I think he just wanted to explore. Little git... He's an indoor cat and completely soft. As soft as a cat can be, anyway.

This morning he was lying on the stairs with his paw outstretched into their cage (claws in). Machu walked right up and sniffed his toes, and Gizmo freaked out, all "WTH, YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO BE SCARED OF ME."

My playpen has a netted top and I won't leave them in there unsupervised for longer than it takes me to grab a drink from the kitchen. There's a nasty-tempered ginger Tom who wanders into our garden and I don't doubt he'd get in there if he could be bothered.
