I've only had my rescue piggies a couple of weeks and could do with some advice please.

The lady who I obtainied my piggies from told me they weren't fussy eaters but they don't like fruit and seem to like to stick to peppers, cucumber, carrot, cabbage, lettuce, parsley, cauliflower leaves and spinach

I've tried them on all kinds of fruit, peas (pod an mange tout), sweetcorn inc dried treats, beans, courgette, parsnip plus loads of other. Any suggestions for expanding their diet. I alternate their dried food between the mixed piece kind and nuggets so they get each once a day. They much prefer nuggets - should I stick to nuggets once I've run out of the mixed variety?

Also I noticed today that George (short haired) had a small patch of matted fur and Brushy (medium length hair) has loads of matted fur around his rear end. It is like it's stuck together with white stuff and it concerned me cos I've been away with work for 2 days and hubby has been looking after them in my absence and it's happened since I've been away. We think we've sussed George's problem as I dropped a blob of suncream on his fur on Tuesday morning by accident when I did his ears when putting him out in the run and the matting is in the same place. However neither hubby or I recall dropping suncream on Brushy so can't work out where his has come from. It looks identical on both of them just Brushy's is more prevalent. So should I take them to the vet or get some piggie shampoo from the pet shop and bath them then monitor if it comes back? Any help you can provide would be appreciated

Thanks
Jo

hi

if they like nuggets more i would stick with nuggets they are the best type of dry food to give them. the veg is good though iceburg lettuce doesn't really have any nutritional value, i'm sure someone can advice * on that bit more though.

the stuff you have found in your male piggies fur is most likely sperm :)

welcome to the forum i'm sure you will enjoy and get lots of help
would love to c piccies of your piggies

Hi!

If they like them, I would stick to good quality nuggets! That way, they are not selective about things and leave half of their crunchies uneaten.

We have some threads on balanced diets and what veg guinea pigs can eat. Too much fruit is not good anyway, so don't pine if they don't like it! Not every piggy likes everything and new stuff is not always welcomed with joy. Your boys seem to be used to a very reasonable choice of veg, so there is no reason to panic.

Your boys seem to have enjoyed a serious humping spree by your description - it is part of the dominance ritual. Sadly "boar glue" is difficult to get off. Any stuff far enough from the skin can be carefully cut off with scissors, the rest is best got of with sugar water. Boar bums tend to need a regular clean/bum bath...

Please have good old browse around the forum. We have quite a few informative threads in our reference section, as well as at the top of the other sections. Don't hesitate to ask questions if you have any.

Hi there and welcome,

As said above, steer clear of iceberg lettuce it has no nutritional value and can cause the runs ;) other varities of lettuce are all good though and much loved by my girls (e.g. Cos, Romaine, Lollo Rosso, Frisse, Endive,... can't think of any others off hand :red ) This thread has a big list of suitable foods though

Maybe try fresh herbs too. My lot love parsley, corrainder and dill., You may want to try some of the foods you have already tried once ina few weeks. Their tastes can change. For example, my girls used to love broccoli, but now won't touch it rolleyes

As for the matted fur, you could try a bath to see if it breaks up easily. Gorgeous Guineas do a fab range of piggie shampoos ;)

I'm afraid I can't answer what it could be, my experiance is only with girls, but maggielisa could be right, it could be 'Boar Juice'...
