Hi guys -
Soo, Butters, my slightly-over-a-year-old female pig had a lump discovered near her nipple a couple of months ago. When I took her to the vet, he drained it and had the sample tested. It came back as a benign mammary cyst. Which means it's harmless. He told us to keep an eye on it, and if it got bigger, to come back and we'd have it removed for her comfort but for no real medical threat.

Tonight, I've discovered the mass is gone. This means one of two things:
1. it ruptured. In which case, what do I do? If it was benign, and just a cyst, then it's no big deal, right? So just keep an eye on her behavior? She's been acting normal, and doesn't even notice it's gone, but then again she didn't seem to notice it was there, either.
2. Her body might've taken care of it, and drained itself. Which I guess is the nicer way of saying it's ruptured...

I don't know what to do. I feel horrible for JUST noticing that it's missing, but she isn't acting any differently at all, and I'd like to hear some of your opinions before rushing her to the vet for (hopefully) unnecessary cause. I'd like to save the worry and stress of a vet visit, if possible.

HELP!

The body has probably just drained it off itself. Dont feel bad about it. It benign so cant do anything nasty and its gone, which is a good thing. You sound like a very reponsible owner taking her to the vets in the first place so please dont feel bad about it.

As you already know that the cyst was benign there really is no cause for worry. Yes, cysts can rupture on their own, and the fluid is dispersed by the body. You may find another appears in the future - lots of women have repeated cysts that are nothing to worry about too.

As with any lump (on us or piggies) it's always best to get it checked out so you know what you are dealing with, so any new ones would need checking but I wouldn't worry about this one.

thank you sooo much for the posts! I really appreciate it, and it makes me feel a ton better. I'll continue to keep an eye on her, as always, for any behavior changes or any more bumps, but for now it's good to know that this was nothing.:<>
