a disease that's hitting rabbits

we have ours vaccinated twice a year for this
good stuff. i just wanted to hi-light it as we didnt know about it when we had our rabbit. he caught it but luckily we caught it in time and he had a big op to save him. he lived for as few years after, but the vet said if we'd caught it an hour later,he'd of died. x

My Ella and Binky are both vaccinated against this and they have both had VHD jabs too which is important. VHD only needs to be done once per year but Myxi is twice per year.:)

I lost a rabbit to myxxy a few years ago. Horrible disease. Unfortunately even now the vaccines do not give 100% immunity so go to the vet at the first sign of swollen nose/eyes/genitals - as stargrrlclaire found, treatment may be possible if it is caught quickly.

thank you for your reply. vaccines can never be 100% guarenteed to work, can they. sorry for your loss. its a horrible thing for them to suffer, and so common x

i think i need to *bump* this up,just for awareness purposes incase there are any new rabbit owners on here,. x

I have honey vacinated against myxy and VHD. However I wonder how much they tell customers in the pet shops. If ever I am in there and get chatting to someone who is thinking about buying a rabbit I always make sure that they know they have to have these jabs and I also warn them that rabbits get problems with their teeth and that they should be willing to pay out if they need their teeth done and that it could be a regular thing . The pet shops don't tell you this (well most of them don't in my opinion) (by the way I don't work in the pet shop but I am always there getting bits and pieces for my pets).

Joy xx
