My black-and-tan sow Muffin has, well lets say, a problem with her nipples. They get covered in what looks like lumps and warts. When we first discovered this problem we raced her to the vets, our hearts pounding with worry and our mouths dry.
The vet nurse inspected the lumps and suprise, suprise some of it came off in her hand! It turns out that Muffin's nipples get covered in layers of grease which harden to form lumps and bumps.
Occasionally it gets so bad we have to soak them and then pick all the grease off which much be distressing for her but it also can't be nice for her to walk around with huge lumps of grease hanging from her belly!
I would post pictures but we washed her today so at the minute they look normal. The vet was sure it was nothing more than excess grease.
But why does she do this? I have kept sows for 10 years and have never ever noticed anything like this before!
Any ideas?

Please, does anyone have any ideas? It doesn't hurt her I'm just really curious to find out why she is like this and no-one else is! Mop doesn't have the same problem...

when the vet noticed the grease come off did they still inspect the mammary areas? for weird textures?

I really wouldnt have thought that the nipple area was one that produced alot of grease so I can't be much good I'm afraid. The only thing I can think of is a subaceous gland issue. My girl has a cyst which developed (but is obvious because it is a small hole!).. but started off as a tiny infected follicle which expended the internal follicle membrance.. now there are more cells producing the grease, which get trapped inside the skin.. creating a pocket. This is crusty at the top, so need help to be cleaned every few weeks.

I can only think that whilst you may not have an infected follicle creating more grease from expanded follicle linings.. you have a few hugely over active ones. Perhaps it's a reaction? To keep the nipples from drying out? Hmm. My brain is melting from being up since midnight (insomnia).

I tried looking up on google but got.. "GREASE NIPPLE... CAR MAINTENANCE".. uh..
