Hi all,
I'm afraid the time might have come for one of my rescue boys :< I'm just wondering what on average we as piggie owners are paying for to have our babies put to sleep.
The guinea pig vet fund has taken a huge dent over the last few weeks and I'm concerned i wont have enough. Want to make sure I am prepared money wise for this bill.

any advice on the costs of this? Just want to get a feel for how much this is going to cost :<

Oh I am sorry you are having to make this decision :(

it doesn't cost a fortune to have a piggy PTS but I guess the price will vary from vet to vet.

Generally I would say between the £20 mark but I could be wrong. When having a small animal PTS, it is the gas used to sedate them first which costs the most money.

We paid £100 to have my rabbit PTS but that was out of hours and we couldn't leave him any longer.

I would phone up your vet first to double check. The last thing you want is to realise you do not have enough money at such an upsetting time. You will also need to decide what you would like to do with your boy afterwards as if you want an individual cremation etc. you will be charged for that.

bringing your boy home to be buried will cost you nothing.

xx

Thank you claire, Thats really helpful. I'm a student and I rescued them from a horrible house. Was aware of how expensive that vets bills can be but was not a active choice to get a pet at such a finanically poor time in my life :<

Anyway that aside thanks again. I'm going to re call the vets in the morning and book him in for another appointment and get some advice.

So sorry LucyMc :( it's always a tough choice & a difficult time. I think we paid around £35 for guinea pts but that was our exotics referral vets who are slightly more expensive. If you are struggling to pay, talk to your vet about paying in 2 or 3 instalments, most vets are understanding about this especially for end of life care.

Sending you our best wishes,

shiny & the piggies

Thanks guys. I just wish vet's would put a rough procedure price list online rather than in thier sugery at the till when your already there. It wouldnt put me off going, by all means I'm not cruel and will always take them to the vets if in doubt. But i think it would help me be able to think right well i need to move my money around a bit like and take stuff from my savings etc.

Piggie update: He's had somemore antibitocs and has started eating again tonight but he is still off colour :S

When I had my Reggie put to sleep it cost me £25,they asked if I wanted him cremated but I wanted him to come home with me so I could bury him instead and they were fine with that x

I would speak to your vet. Any decent vet will put the needs of the animal first & payment concerns second. So sorry for you and your little one. x

I'm sorry to hear that one of your boys is poorly. It's always a heart rending time when you've got to make the PTS decission, especially more so when you're short of funds.

My little Madam had to be PTS last month and our vet was very good, not charging for the service at all. Though I had paid out nearly £100 on 2 visits during the previous 5 days.

I would ring your vet & check price with them first. It is also possible that you could take him to the PDSA but you'd need proof of low earnings etc.

I'm so sorry to hear this, it's so so sad :(:( when we had our Teddy PTS it cost about £25. He had to have gas first. Sending hugs Xx

Thanks for your advice guys. He went today and has actually completely turned himself around.. Little just giving me a huge fright!
So appoligises for scaring you all! yesterday it was very touch and go. was almost certain id be looking at this decision today. But thankfully not for the time being.

He's still having to be kept seperate from his buddy but seems to have made a miraculous recovery from last night. He's had a uti on and off for the past month but had a few serious bleeds with him this week and then after his fight with leonard he seemed to go downhill.
Got more antibotics and just got to work on re introducing them.
He is the most agressive little thing ive seen at times and has began to fight with leonard on and off. Resulting in a nice big nose bleed last week and one of the lastest in a string of emegancy vet visits.

Thank you all so much for your infomation. Was really helpful :)

anyone got any advice on very angry little pigs though?

Great news about him pulling round, I hope he continues to get better. As far as the fighting goes I can't help as I haven't kept boys before & our girls are great with each other most of the time!

In my experience, piggies that are ill are very easily irritated by cagemates they normally get on well with. When our one older boar was really quite ill with kidney problems, he got very tetchy with his brother & it was the only time we ever had to separate them. Do you have a divider you can put in their cage if it is very bad? Hopefully as your piggies continues to feel better he might be more open to being reintroduced to his friend.

I find that lots of hay is good for distraction when they are a bit cross but in general, I try to keep things like tubes, hideys etc out of the cage when there is aggression going on as it seems to make it worse. I make a shaded end of the enclosure with a towel & then introduce other cage items such as tubes gradually when the boars are more happy with each other's company. I always have two food bowls even though they often eat out of the same one anyway, at least they have the choice!

Glad to hear he is a bit on the mend anyway :)
