Hi
I know this is a massive ask but i have a 2 day old sow needing to be hand reared. At the moment she's with my mum as the next 48hrs are critical. The vet advised keeping her warm and feeding every 2 hours. If she makes it through, I will be getting her back and wont to place her with my calmest laid back sow, Amy, to act as her surrogate. However, I dont have a spare cage and really dont wont to spend the money on another cage for a short period of time. Can anyone help me out?
x

Where are you based? Have a look on freecycle or gumtree.co.uk, vivastreet.co.uk

Yes Graham that is the best option. If you can find someone with mini's maybe a local rescue then she may stand a better chance. If you tell me your location I'll have a look around for you. I'm doing nothing now except feeding the hungry herd! :)

The mum had a massive litter and wasnt interested in her babies at all. I was picking up rex's at the time and one baby was found dead with the one i have on the way out. The women said she had no time to help it live and was going to leave it. I took it straight to the Vet who gave vitamen injections, formula milk and bottles for me. The vet said she isn't ill just too small so if she makes it through the night she has a good chance. The issue now is finding a cage to place her with her surrogate. I don't know anyone who is near me who has just had babies, would the mother accept another sow and if so would i get her back? If anything went wrong i'd want to take her straight away. So the person would need to be very close to me

I am in Penicuik, Midlothian. Looked on Gumtree and left a Wanted ad. Will look elsewhere and see what I can find. My rex Amy is very gentle and mothers the rest I know she'd make a good surrogate. My past sow rejected her babies and her sister took the mother role but they were all big and healthy so really want to protect this wee thing.

Awww how sad hope you get one from somewhere. Join your local free cycle group and ask there or look on ebay for a bargain cage!
I sold a Nero 3 only used twice and it sold for £6 so there are bargains to be had x

I'll get on ebay just now and have a look. She is so beautiful just want her to pull through, named her Angel so hopefully one is looking over her.

She doesn't as I have already called her. I was wanting them but heard nothing back, so picked up two from a local rescue and collect the others today

Looked online for rescues in the area but couldn't find any. A breeder would do (God forgive me for saying that) ::) anyone who has minis would do.

I have called round all the breeders I know who are local and either no one is due for a few weeks or have just had a large litter and refuse to help.

Don't you have a darrier that you could keep her in for the short term until you got something better? I know its not ideal but it would be safe and warm temp accomodation.

She's in a small plastic pet carrier at the moment with fleece blankets at the moment. But if she pulls through ideally she should be with a surrogate. x

sarsmccabe I hope someone can help you.
Could you make some kind of cage quickly out of something. When one of mine got ill and I didn't have a spare cage I took the run apart and made a small ''cage'' under my desk. :-\

She would fit through the bars of my run, she's that small. I could keep her in the carrier but she needs another piggy soon. Its breaking my heart not having her beside me tonight and I want to give her the best chance i can. Just hope someone can help me out. Only need the cage for 6 - 7 weeks tops till she's large enough to go in with all the girls. x

What about putting something round the bottom of the run so she can't escape.
I stuck cardboard round mine and it stopped my sow escaping.

Thats a great idea. If i cant sorce a cage tomorrow morning I'll do that. Thanks for the idea, i'd never have thought of that. x

You have kids don't you? What about a toy box without the lid? I have a few big one's which would be ideal as would keep the warmth in aswell. Wish I was closer as I have something which would do you perfectly x

You could have our Nero 2 but by the time you had got here (N.Wales) it would have been cheaper to buy one! Is it just the cage thats the issue? Or the hand-rearing? Surely a box or plastic storage container/tupperware box would do for now if you are stuck?
I really hope Angel makes it.

Thank you. She's in a carrier at present but think she would be better with a surrogate for the warmth and extra support. Any advice on hand-rearing would be great. Vet just said to keep her warm and feed every two hours. I am used to feeding every two hours as i did with both my daughters.
