Now I know the feeling on P@H are very clear but I just wanted to see if anyone else had seen this. I had to pop into my local one for some food and probiotics recently and as usual I couldn't help but look at the little piggies.

However I was really surprised to see what I am pretty sure is a Texel baby (seriously curly coat, slightly squashed looking little face and absolutely adorable!) And a long haired one I asked the store person about and he said it was a peruvian but I'm pretty sure it was actually a sheltie (short hair on the face and long haired body?) and round the other side two more little texel babies. In fact, I wish I'd taken some pictures so you guys could help me work out what they are! They were just adorable, and I'm not even a fan of long haired piggies! Are they selling pedigree babies now?

I've only seen it in one store and it really surprised me. I was a little concerned they were going to get the wrong sort of homes because they will need so much more care but there's nothing I can really do about it and recently P@H have improved in the sort of questions they ask people and refusing to sell to unsuitables (at least in my locals).

Has anyone else seen this in their local pet stores?

I've seen what look like swiss and some LH babies in mine right now, I get big bags of pellets from there now due to work etc its the only place thats ever open that do 10kg sacks and there is nobody in for deliveries. I am glad yours is getting better I just adopted two piggies out of the adoption centre and all I was asked was whether id had pigs before and what cage I had that was literally it, nothing on diet, winter care, vets, hay, bedding etc!

Yes the one in Aylesbury are selling lots of different breeds now and I was quite surprised when I took a peek at them two weeks ago. One thing I will say is they sell guinea pigs and rabbits so quickly and I've never seen a guinea pig in there more than 2 weeks. I know that some do sadly go into thrive regaining centre. Mind you to be honest I would imagine that it's those guinea pigs that get snapped up by experienced piggy owners so they are probably quite fortunate. That's not to say that families don't take great care of their pets as many live great lives bring handled every day by children

Blimey that's weird, I popped in yesterday as I read about the cheap Newton icepods on sale and I noticed what looked to be swiss babies in their.

Not sure about the texel pigs, but I got my two girls from PAH five+ years ago (before I knew what they were like rolleyes ) and all the pigs in there were obviously from two litters probably with the same father (either shelties or abby x sheltie babies). They never asked me any questions, didn't even advise that Pickles would need hair cuts, grooming etc being a sheltie. What more do you expect from PAH?! rolleyes

It's so odd. I've never see long haired piggies there before and my Mum went in another store when she was out shopping a little way away today and said that she saw long haired piggies. It just seems to have suddenly become quite common round here which I wouldn't have thought was a good thing with the horribly hot weather.

That's terrible. I'm actually curious about what they ask so I hover around and listen. They were telling people about safe fruit and veg and how much to give and how piggies need lots of hay and their body temperatures being similar to ours. As well as bigger cages being needed and all those sort of things. I've been quite impressed. It's no where near perfect but I don't think they are quite the villains they used to be! In fact, I'm not ashamed to admit I would quite happily adopt a piggy from the adoption section had I not found Nutty a friend elsewhere.

Now they just need to make it consistently good across the UK and they might not be quite so hated!

I haven't seen any on my local PAH. But I have to say, it does worry me as Texels and other long haired ones might be bought by people who have no clue how to look after, like you mentioned. People who buy on a whim might want to buy something unusual and different. It would be good indeed to know what they are asked.

My local PAH has really nice staff and such and I do think the majority of staff cares about the animals and I totally agre with education and promoting better standards of care. But that doesn't solve the problem with over abandonment and neglect on the long run. And I think for as long as someone is able to buy a animal without thinking, problems like neglect and abandonment will continue. At the end of the day PAH is a business who's main objective is to return a profit. On the other hand breeders will continue to breed if they can sell. Sorry, mini rant over :)

I popped into my local p@h because it was the only place open for hay I am in Chippenham in Wiltshire and I also noticed what looked like Peruvian and texel babies in their too - I was really shocked.

My caramel came from p@h (before I knew about rescues) and she is a cross Abby and Peruvian and has long hair. I had no info about how to care for her. I have learned over the past 4 years that she is happier with a short cut all over as she overheats easily. I personally think p@h put profits before pets
