Hi,
I picked up my 3 year old piggy to put her in her run and I felt a little lump touch my hand. On inspection I notices she appears to have a hard large bean like size lump on her belly side of her lady bits. She did not seem to be sore, the skin is the same colour and the hair is normal. It does not feel soft like a cyst it feels hard and a bit irregular. I have a bad feel about this one. Can anyone help?

I just had her sister spayed for losing a tumour out of her womb. I just feel confused. I have just had poorly poorly piggies lately:.... What do you think? The vet I have got to know is good with cavies. I can call them tomorrow and find when she next has an appointment:(.

I sympathise Wiggie - I have been keeping up with your old thread - I now have 3 piggies with lumps - a boar I took in with one the size of a walnut on his hip (vet said to monitor as biopsy came back inconclusive ) a 3 year old sow with a fatty lump onher belly, and now her 3yr old cage mate has a small firm lump to the left of her nipple - so with her I am thinking possible mamary tumour:... - although it could also be a harmless growth, cyst or abcess - am off to the vet myself - wishing you luck.

i really hate to say this but i found a lump in what sounds like the same place on angel, just under 2 weeks ago. it turns out to be a mammary tumour and she basically is living on borrowed time now. i really hope this does not turn out to be the same for your pig. my vet talked me through everything and the choices we had. he told me that he has never removed a mammary tumour without it returning within a few weeks and the guinea pig or rat (apparantley it tends to effect both these animals) ending up having to be pts. i decided after talking it over to leave angel to have a few weeks of love rather than putting her through the op etc.
i really really do hope you don't have the same problem with your pig. please keep us updated on what the vets says. i'm keeping everything crossed for you both

Hi, thanks for your support. Could you tell me where the mammory tumour is exactly? This feels like a hard lump her in private parts. Is your guinea pigs lump closer to the nipples? I just feel a bit numb I can't believe why they are all getting seriously ill.

the lump was slightly to the side of her nipple at first. edging towards her genitals. it has now grown very big in the last two weeks and completely surrounds her nipple and the area around it. it is hard and like the size of a large cherry tomato if you can understand that

It is possible it could be a fatty lump or sebacous cyst so please do not worry until you know for sure. :)

Sorry to hear about the mammory tumour it sounds awful, the only thing that I can think is a silver lining is that you have some time to say goodbye. Everytime a piggy has got ill my instinct has been right, I hope I am wrong, each time it has been rubbish.
I am hoping genitals are lumpy when they are on heat? I guess not I have never felt this before and is very different. I thought she was doing really well and was healthy. I dont believe this is a mammory tumour, I think this is ? cervical or bladder and likely to be a tumour due to it being hard and lumpy and adhered to the body. I dont think it is a cyst. 8...

please let us know how you get on. fingers crossed this is not anything sinister. mamary tumours from what my vet said, are very aggressive tumours and grow quickly. hopefully this is not growing like angels has and it turns out to be something easier to deal with. lots of healing vibes are being sent from me and all my animals. good luck

Thank you, I going to try not to worry to much as I am not sure I can cope with much more stress. I have shed a few more tears already. All of my piggies have lost a bit of weight, but they may still be grieving. I will call the vets tomorrow and book up I am not going to take her til the specialist is there or I think it will waste my time and stress me out having someone fumble around and say they are not sure, she is normally in Mon-Fri and occassional weekends. Obviously if she shows any illness I will take her in anyway. I find finding a good cavy vet is a pain in the bum and they are like gold dust.

Autumn had a lump removed back in November I think it was which was just to one side of her nipple. It was a softish lump with a hard pea type lump behind. As soon as the vet saw it she booked her in for surgery and Autumn came home later that day minus the lump and her nipple.

These are the photos we took of the lump

This is her stitches a few days after the surgery

Autumn is now fine and has recovered well

Thanks for messages. Countrylass did the vet do a aspiration test first or just go for it?
My piggy has a hard lump right next to her lady bits not near her nipples. This is on the furry bit above her opening. I am an appointment with the top vet on Thursday, I know that sounds like some time away but I need it to be with her.

One of my piggies had the same thing once, it turned out that she was passing a bladder stone & it became lodged in the entrance :... If it interferes with her weeing or pooing it will be a medical emergency, so if you have not been able to get an earlier appointment I would monitor her "Output" just in case that is what it is.

Thanks, it is possible you are right. She has not sqeaked at all. I just tried to get her to pee after holding no luck catching her, she ran into her box and it was dark. I was not prepared enough. I will try again later. I am not keen on surgery, I guess I will need to see what the vet recommends.

If it feels more like a "Bump" rather than a lump & it isn't really visible to the eye, then it is possibly a stone, usually they are very easily removed by a competent vet manually & may not even need a light whiff of gas to sedate the piggy. Please do not attempt this yourself, as obviously if the stone blocked the urinary tract that would be a medical emergency as she would be unable to pass urine or poops. Please monitor her toilet habits & ensure that she passes wee & poop over the next few days until you get to the vets, or contact your vet tomorrow for advice. I have had 2 sows pass stones in this way & they suffered no ill effects whatsoever :)

It does feel like a lump and no you cant see it. You may be right. I will try to get her in earlier if I can. She does see to be a right pain as I have had her out put her back she wont pee but I am watching her. I will keep watching. She ate a poo next to me. I hope she will be ok, I think I am writing her off as I have had a awful time recently with my others.

I have separated her. How long should it be before she wees? Nothing is happening!

Is she eating or drinking?

I am not sure if she is drinking, but she has eaten some cucumber and a few pellets. She has done 2 poos in 90 min and no wee. I called the out of hours vet, the nurse said she could go in, but they would not be able to really do anything but monitor. I am working all day tomorrow. My mum has offered to drive to my house and take her in tomorrow. My main vet is off until wednesday but there is another vet that could see guinea pigs.

PLEASE HELP ME! My piggy saw the vet and had an xray. She has a large bladder stone stuck in her urethra. It apparently is non operable. The only treatment is to be PTS!

They have prescribed 0.67ml metacam? She is 1kg is this right?

Peples weighed 940g and was given 0.06ml a day!

She has 0.4 baytril Peples had 0.2ml? Is this right?
Is the medication going to kill her anyway?

I could not PTS as she is still eating and purring and trotting around. I have just got back so I have not monitored her today my Mum has.

Is there anyother treatment or am I going to see a second Piggy die within weeks, on top of Peples CANCER!

A lot of vets seem to be prescribing very large doses of metacam recently. I've been told this is the rat dose and the appropriate dose for a guinea pig is 0.1 ml or 0.15 ml at the most. As far as saying a urethral stone is inoperable, my vet manages to remove most urethral stones without the need for any anaesthetic and can just manipulate them out. I think you need to get another opinion on this.

The metacam dose varies - there is not only a dose range (i.e. a high or low "safe" dose as with most drugs) there is also cat and dog strength, which are very different.

I think you should consider a second opinion - the stone may be operable, but it'd take a very experienced vet.

Next events......

I called and spoke to the vet, they said they tried to call me. The specialist that operated on my other piggy was consulted and they felt it was more optimistic. I asked why the painkiller was x10 stonger than my other piggy post op. They implied they thought she was going to die.

They said I could take her in tomorrow for another opinion.

What are your thoughts? I reckon my brain will pop soon.

TODAY....

The lump was removed under general anaesthetic. My girls are still at the vets. The vet is hopeful my piggy has been sorted!

EMOTIONAL ROLLERCOASTER!

Would you recommend I complain about being told to PTS yesterday?

No true confimation yet, I was just relieved the vet got it out. They said it was in her vulva? Does that mean it got through her urethra or was this from her uterus? Peples just had uterine cancer she is her sister.

post op piggy will need special care.I cleaned and dried back of Ruby for a week until she will be able to stretch on her own while toilet.Clean cage + minimum minimum disturbance + care and may be food.

Lily seems to be a bit swollen and sore around her tummy? She has zantac, baytril and 0.06ml metacam. Is that enough metacam?

I am worried she has pooped x2 in the last hour I will need to check wee again. The swelling is more on the left, any ideas?

Thanks. x
