Bear in mind i have a pair of boys, and no plans to get them girlfriends!

I know this is a pro-rescue forum, and is therefore against the endless breeding of guinea pigs for sale in pet shops.

I am a horsey person, and i am against the endless backyard breeding of poor quality and poor conformation horses just to make more of the same or for different colours. I am not against the breeding of good quality proven stock and good training on the results to make them worth more.

If someone is breeding guinea pigs responsibly, should this be encouraged? I am taking about not breeding carriers of the lethal white gene, or breeding for good conformation or not breeding poor characteristics like poor eyesight.

I realise breeding guinea pigs will not be in the same league as breeding competition horses, but should we not be thinking about it in the same lines? If we only allow the 'backyard breeders' to breed hundreds and hundreds of any-quality bloodlines, will this not just perpetuate the characteristics we do not want?

I was just interested in the opinions of the forum members.

The discussion of intentional breeding is not allowed on this forum as stated in the forum rules. I am therefore locking this thread. Please PM me or another member of forum staff if you have any queries.
