I had to make a phone call to my local P@H today after a little girl I babysit got guinea pigs there and discovered a variety of ailments including one that is blind in one eye and said eye is permanantly weeping. Her Mum was to angry to make the call to I offered. I'm not saying all the stores are like this and I warned them that one was particularly bad locally.

But the call went something like this:

Staff: Hello Pets at Home ----- branch. How can I help you?
Me: I'm calling to complain about some guinea pigs purchased in you store. Can I speak to the manager please?
Staff: Can I say whose calling?
(starting to get cross at them)
Me: An extremely disatisfied customer. That's who.
(a short pause follows this)
Staff: I'll just get him for you. Hold the line please.

I spent the next fifteen minutes explaining each problem with the guinea pigs and demanding they pay for vet treatment. He agreed that if they being in the receipts for vets treatment and the piggies then they will pay. Not a bad result but I'm still fuming with them. Little Molly is distraught that they are so ill and cried herself to sleep about them last night.Grrr.

Just had to explain my rant.

GAH b***** P@H.

Good on you for calling and complaining. I hate to think what other pigs in this store are like healthwise.

If only they'd all get shut down and then there wouldn't be so many ill lonely piggies sitting in hutches in the cold without any attention around the UK grrrr

That sounds awful, all the excitement of getting the piggies to then find so many problems. Just think what it would be like for them if they were still at the shop.

Thankfully my local P@H is really quite good, animals are well cared for and although I dont think that its the company policy, a number of the staff handle the young and shy animals and allow them time out of the cages.

Just discovered the pigs also have problems with large sores on their feet. P@H say they will only pay for the first vet trip but the family have spent triple what they paid for the piggies on multiple vet trips.

Grrrr so cross right now. I'm popping over to help syringe feed them because they not eating or drinking. Luckily for them I have some experience with this. It just seems to be one thing after another with my new rescue pair ill as well!

If they're only going to pay for one vet visit - a call to head office might yield more results in terms of someone getting a slapping and getting the vets bills paid for...

I hope they pull through (and that you new piggies get better too!) :)

Thanks everyone. They're so small to be so sick. They're good at taking the special food the vet gave them so I'm hopeful they will recover. Molly is only ten and practised holding my piggies , chosing toys and cosies for them weeks before she got them. She was prepared to do all the feeding etc. and her mum was willing to do cleaning out but this has made what should have been a good time quite horrible. Bless them.

Not good enough, they should never have been sold in such a state in the first place. Agree with going higher, maybe even have a chat with trading standards as surely selling ill pigs is breaking some kind of trading rule/law. Would be worth maybe asking the rspca if they could advise, doubt this would be a case for them to take on but if the pet shop is selling sick animals then they need to know, and let the head office know whom you have also been in contact with, you might find them more helpful if they know you are getting advice from trading standards.

I keep thinking of the words "fit for purpose", does this qualify for pets?

You did well to call up and complain. I am so angry and upset with all these poor animals who are not being well cared for and who are just so unwell. It is so wrong. I cannot understand why there is not an investigation. The rspca should intervene as it is a case of neglect.

I've contacted the rspca and helped compsed a letter to P@H head office. To be fair when I first saw the pigs a day after they got them they seemed alright. Just a bit lethargic. Two days later when they had to get them out to clean them we noticed the first problems. Its been nearly two weeks since they got them now but complaining was not the first thing on our minds. Getting them well again was.

Now I'm pretty sure they will pull through and I've given myself a chance to get cross. The shop didn't even apologulise. Just said they would pay one vet bill and left it at that. One is definitely blind in one eye and may need furthdr treatment for that but otherwise they should be ok. No thanks to the hopeless staff. mallethead

Yes, pets have to be "fit for purpose", ie healthy when sold. Trading standards take this seriously, I was involved in a case where a seriously ill iguana had been sold and the shop were prosecuted.

Urgh horrendus pipe little things, good luck with everything sending happy healing piggy vibes! xoxo

In that case I think there is very good cause to take this further, make sure everything is kept a note of, vet trips, dates, consultation results, treatments, further developments in relation to the ongoing health problems with the pigs.

And then make contact with trading standards, they could not have become ill over the short period since bringing them home, they would have been ill before sold and not noticed.

I feel really sorry for the little girl, she should be enjoying her pets not watching them being sick.
