my old boar Patch has impaction and for the last 6 months hes been "emptied" once a day, but over the last few weeks hes had to be emptied twice sometimes three times a day. And the poo has become like a thick paste instead of normal poos, i don't think i've seen him do a proper poo in the last week, he just tends to sit all hunched up in the litter tray looking really miserable :( hes definately been eating, hay, guinea food and veggies, i'm thinking of syringing him some pro-biotic to see if that will help

Any suggestions, tips?

awww bless, that sounds really miserable, i havent any advice sorry, but have lots of loving vibes x

It could be another problem behind that! He may have a problem with his digestion as he has obviously got soft poo. Have you checked his pee for signs of UTI?

I would take him off fresh food and just have him on hay, hay based pellets and some syringed probiotics. You might also think about having him seen by a vet if things don't get better.

thanks Wiebke, i was just thinking about this, i'll see how he goes without veg for a day, i shall make an appointment for tomorrow with the vet. His pee is normal and no squeaking from him

an update on Patch after having 24 hours off the veg he was fine, did take him to the vet and she said he probably just had too much fresh veg, she also said hes showing signs of slowing down, hes an old piggie (could be 6/7/8) he still eats well and potters around alot, but i've noticed that he has developed a double chin, it rests on his front feet when he settles down to sleep, i've had a feel of it and there are no lumps or anything. if i press it he isn't in any pain, just wanted to know if anyone else has had a pig with this? am i just worrying to much? :redrolleyes

I am glad that it was just a minor digestive problem. General slowing down is normal for older piggies.

Perhaps you will find this link about old piggies interesting, even if it doesn't touch on your specific issue: http://www.jpgpr.com/jpgpr400.html

here are some pics of him

as you can see, you can't see his feet in the 2nd pic!

Has he got fatty eye?
I've noticed with older guineas, they loose their double chin, that's what it could be, he's lost the fatty tissue inside, and it's dropped, hence it hiding his feet?

just an update on Patch, took him to see the rodentologist last night as i wasn't happy with him at all, and it turns out that he has odema (sp?) and its pretty much the beginning of the end :( it can be managed with lasix apparently ?/ he also had some spurs on his teeth so had them cut off he seems to be stuffing his face with everything in sight! I'm so mad that the vet i saw missed this shes normally very good with pigs but completely missed this mallethead:x
