I've taken my guinea pig to the vets and she's got a chest infection. She's only 2 and I don't want her to die. I am unsure how to care for her as I have never has a guinea pig fall poorly like this.

I am giving her baytril (antibiotics), mushing her food down etc. I am making sure she's hydrated and comfortable. But I don't know what else I can do for her. I am visiting the vets again on Thursday and taking her sister Susie too to check her out.

I am off to pick up hubby up from work now, but I'll be back later.

Thanks in advance

You may find this thread here helpful; it also lists probiotics and vitamin C products, either of which your piggy will benefit from: https://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/threads/complete-hand-feeding-guide.115359/

We always recommend to ask your vet for a diuretic with a chest infection to help drain the build-up of fluids and ease the breathing. Bisolvon powder is good for dissolving any mucus.

Please give a pinch of probiotics about 1-2 hours after the antibiotics to help prop up the guts. Extra vitamin C is helping to boost the immune system.

Most URIs can be healed, unless yours has a particularly virulent strain or an another ongoing health problem. There are also stronger (if unlicensed) anotibiotics available these days if you don't see any improvement or a deterioration over the course of a few days, like marbocyl or zithromax. ;)

I agree with everything Wiebke has suggested.

You could also try steam therapy to ease any congestion, using 2 drops of Olbas oil in a bowl of hot water next to the cage. You can also use a steam inhaler if you have one, hold over the nose in 5 second bursts.

Thanks for your advice. She died this morning x

I will do later. I was just shocked to find her dead as I'd had only fed her at 4 this morning x

I am so sorry for the loss of your little girl.

Sleep well little one
x x

I'm really sorry for your sad loss, it must have been a terrible shock despite all your efforts to help her

It still makes me weepy because if the vet had listened to me in the first place, none of this would have happened.

Thanks for your kind words x

Don't beat yourself up about it, it isn't your fault. We all rely on vets. You did your best.BIG HUGS from me and all my furries

I'm so sorry... sometimes, in spite of doing everything we can for them, their little bodies are just not strong enough to keep on. Many ((HUGS)) to you!
