Hi everyone I was wondering if the rescues might be able to tell us their storys of how they got started. I would really like to start a rescue and help the poor little piggies. I have got to wait a few years though for my daughter to grow up a little as I want to give the piggies 110% when I start anything less would not be fair. I would have to do it from home would that put people off? I know it's going to cost me money take a lot of time and there is not always going to be a happy ending I fully expect to be heart broken at times but I also know that for me the good times would make them worth it. But I was wondering how other people had got started? How do the rescues rehome anywhere in the country I can't drive would not having a car be a problem do all the rescues have cars or do some of you not and how do you cope? Please don't tell me it's going to be hard or cost money or be very hard when a sick piggie dies I know all this but to me the ones I can help will make it worth it but would LOVE to hear other rescues storys.

I would say start by fostering for a rescue, you will pick up lots of tips, gain experience and see if it really is something you want to do. People don't realise how different it is to looking after your own piggies.

I have fostered for my local RSPCA for 5 years, and I know I couldn't run my own rescue, I can deal with the piggies no problem but I just wouldn't be able to deal with the people.

The whole of Walsall RSPCA is run from peoples homes, however we don't open to the public for people to come and see the animals as it just isn't practical.

We rehome nationally as we are able to ask other RSPCA's to do the homechecks for us, if you can't get a homecheck's done nationally then I would concentrate on rehoming in your local area. I wouldn't rehome any animal without a homecheck, people will lie to get the animals and although a homecheck doesn't gaurentee a good home it does put alot of people off.

The car, I can see as being a problem, every animal we have in goes to the vet for a health check, the males for for neutering and that is just for the healthy pigs. Generally I am at the vets at least twice a week and I only foster around 12 piggies and 8 bunnies. Also you may need the emergency vets, I know you might with your own piggies but there is a greater chance when you are taking in neglected/pregnant piggies.

If you have any other questions please ask..

I guess I really better get that test passed then wish me luck lol. I am hoping to be able to drive in the future if I did start a rescue I would go very small scale and I know the vets I would want to use and it's very local. I would love to foster I would want to do that now but there is nowhere I can foster for :( there is a rabbit rescue that sometimes gets piggies I think I might try her not sure if she uses foster people though. i really was thinking about going small scale though I would probs only take 4 piggies at a time. How do you find people to rehome to? To tell you the truth I thought the car thing may be a BIG issue I am planning on getting one just got to get though the test first :(

You have hit on a few point that i had written out. Defo get the test out of the way first, a car is a brilliant thing in an emergency.

I'm so glad you said small scale. Again another point i was going to bring up. I would happily have you foster for us. Infact i have 3 girls that need a place till i can find them forever homes. a lady had two girls from us last year, 1 had to be pts, she did well, was 6 at adoption and had 6 months in her forever home. This left the other one alone, luckily she managed to bond the remaining sow to her younger two. No matter how many times we tried one of her girls just wouldnt leave Suger (the one thats at RB now) alone so we decided to stop trying and just leave them to live as two seperate pairs. However the ladys circumstances have changed and needs to rehome, as you know in the contract they must come back to us but as i cannot cope with many (especially longhaireds) at the moment i will be franticly posting in the next few weeks for a home for them. Obviously if you wish to try your hand at fostering for us, give us a shout :)
