Hi guys, has anyone else noticed that their piggies tend to eat the new hay that is put down to them and leave the older stuff. I feed them timothy hay and they love it, but even though I sift through the hay for poops and discard wet hay every day its the new hay they go mad for. At £22 for a bag its too expensive to dump it all every day. Has anyone else noticed this, or is it just my two :hmm:

maisie and eddie practically beg for fresh hay every hour or so! (yes, they get it :)))

... and mine .
I like to give mine several types of hay - for variety but have noticed that, even if I top up with what they have already, they go for the fresh stuff.
Timothy hay is a big hit with mine.

It's a piggie trait I think..... they like the fresh stuff, maybe put a little in and often in an evening when you are around. We use a cheaper Meadow Hay as a staple and feed Timothy twice a day as a extra but due to the cost keep topping it up during evening to avoid too much wastage

That's a good idea, the little horrors just like munching the seed heads off the timothy. Oh dear I think they are spoiled, all My fault .

:)) Ours are the same, piggies get very used to the good life quickly, but they are worth every penny... Ours really love the Oxbow Timothy Hay...

Ours too. I love putting in a big pile and seeing them make nests, bury into it and run through it but I do feel bad about the waste.

Does anyone recycle the used hay at all? I know it could go into a composter but we are useless at composting - no dedication to layering or turning it to get air in.

I've wondered often whether I could just put the hay directly from the piggies homes onto the veg patch.

Composting is hard work to get it done quickly, I have varying degrees of success with my three compost bins, so now I just tend to put the stuff in and leave it.
I am not an expert but I can't see any harm in putting a really thick layer on as a mulch, apart from the wind blowing it about
