Sorry it's me again with my millionth question! :))

As I've mentioned before I'm hoping to add to my piggy gang. I plan to keep the boys separate from the girls at all times because I definitely don't want any pregnant girls. I was wondering would you still have the boys neutered even if they're are not going to be living with the girls? It such an ordeal to put them through, or is it better to be safe than sorry?

Hi Julie

I personally wouldn't bother unless you were going to let them live with the girls. Neutering has no effect on a male pig's personality (as demonstrated by Dodge's enthusiastic humping of Cherry even now almost six months after they met...horny little wotsit...) and while routine for a piggy savvy vet, still carries many risks largely just as it envolves a GA.

If my boys lived without girls, I wouldn't have had them done, they just disliked each other so had to find girlfriends!

Thanks :) my boys are nicely settled and although the older one was neutered I don't think he could cope with the excitement off suddenly been put with girls :))

Hi Julie,

I had my boar neutered when he was with another male, but this was because he was already going under GA to have a couple of lumps removed. Unfortunately his buddy died shortly after and luckily it allowed him to be rehomed with a couple of girlfriends. However, I wouldn't have had him neutered if he hadn't already been having a GA. Unless you want to introduce them to the females then I wouldn't put them through it.

Personaly i wouldn't either, its a big operation with a lot of risks, and to put them through it for no reason, wouldnt be fair, if they are ahppy as they are i would just leave it. As the others have said it doesn't effect their behaviour, my by has been done a year and a hlaf and he still has his moments, poor girls.

Neutering takes only away the ability to make babies, but doesn't change the behaviour, so unless you are planning to put them with girls afterwards, it's not worth the risk and the money.

Thanks all, I'm not going to get him done then. I'll keep them all completely separate. It's definitely not worth the risk and the two boys are bonding really well.
