Last year, after their first session on the lawn, one of my piggles had a bit of bloat and I was told that the first grass of the year can be too rich in something or other which can cause bloat.
Finlay thankfully lived to tell the tale!
I have today mowed the lawn for the first time and was wondering how many more cuts till it's safe for my delicate piggles to go and enjoy fresh noms and fresh air.

Thanks

If you just give him a handful, if he's not used to getting grass, that should be enough for a taste. He may well just stuff himself silly with lovely fresh grass if left out for a while so that obviously won't give him a happy tum.

I put some of my pigs out for a few hours the other day and they're all fine but mine are used to getting grass anyway.

Just remember it comes out again very quickly :p

This time last year I put my girls out, Maisie really pigged out on the new grass and ended up having an emergency op to sort her intestines out. Very scary time. At the moment they are having about a handful each just to re-introduce it into their diet. Was advised by the vet during spring growth let Maisie have only a very short time about 10 minutes and even during the summer only allow Maisie about 40 minutes even on the poor grass.

This is so bizarre, considering piggies are meant to live on grass- what has domestication done to these wee delicate tummies eh?

She ate so much grass it caused a blockage/ impaction in her intestines, she had a laparotomy - part of her intestine removed and stitched back together again. The vet was amazed she actually came through the op. To look at her now though she is always first when the salad is served and she is still the greediest pig I've owned

I would start with just about half a handful of grass and slowly build it up from there. then you won't have a problem when you put out your boys for longer and longer periods of time. Just take it slowly and let Finlay get used to fresh grass.

thanks... erm, the thing is, it's all gone in the mower, but will do that from now on!

Keeping the lawn edges nicely clean with a pair of scissors is a good way to start! :))

I've been giving my boys a handful of grass over the last few days and its been going in seconds! Today they had 5-10 mins on the grass, Bubbles spent most of it looking terrified and trying to get back in his hidey but Patches was stuffing his face, will have to keep an eye on his tum tonight / tomorrow I think.

Lol - boys!inbreeding

they got about 20 mins on the short dry grass today... nothing to report

i re-introduce the grass every year over a period of a few weeks as all mine seem to have sensitive tums. i start off with very small amounts and then gradually increase. :)

yes, thanks, they have been OK. They went out for a few short installments during the nice weather, no more than 30 mins (last day) and have been fine. Thankfully.
