A third piggy?

Hiya, I'm new to this forum but I've got 2 male guinea pigs (Sammy and Ollie) who are around 5-6 months old. I got them both together when they 4 weeks old so they get on great together. However I'm in the process of building them a bigger cage which has lead me to think about adding another one into the group. Do you think 2 male guinea pigs who have been brought up together would accept a younger male guinea pig?

Honest opinion - no, not yet.

A trio of boars rarely work and they are a LOT of hard work.

I only have a trio of boars because I was boar dating my William after his brother Keith died. William is three. I was originally meant to just get one friend for William, but when I saw both Alan & Clive's beautiful faces, I couldn't resist them! And they were 3 week old babies.

Please keep your bonded pair a pair and maybe in the future, when they are a little older you could try to introduce another?

Or rescue another pair (keeping them separately from the other pair.)

No, please don't - your chances are very small that they will make it past the stroppy months without fall out. You boys will have hormonal surges sooner or later which will test their relationship over the next half year. Any third party can be exactly what breaks that fragile balance.


While boar trios are not impossible, the only stable ones I tend to involve boars of different ages and exactly the right character mix, which takes experience to judge. Generally, boars are best kept in pairs. If you want more, think about rehoming an already bonded, stable pair from a rescue.

No they wont, they are a bonded pair and if it they were females it would be a different story. If you get this thrid piggy you run the risk of upsetting the two boys you have and the 3rd piggy runs the risk of being bullied.

If you want more piggies either rehome a another pair of boars or sows are fine in a trio with introduction if they didnt come together.
