Would a vet be able to tell me if my guinea pig is pregnant or just overweight? She won't even let me pick her up to weigh her now. She is eating and drinking lots and she is going to the toilet as normal. Thanks

With the help of an x-ray or a scan, a vet should be able to diagnose a pregnancy reliably within the last 2-3 weeks, as that is when the calcium goes into the bones of the babies. Before that, it can be extremely hit and miss considering the experiences a number of members had with vet diagnoses as to pregnancy and/or the number of pups.

How you can weigh a guinea pig without handling it: How To Pick Up Your Guinea Pig

Thanks, I didn't want to stress her out of she is pregnant.

PS: I have added a link about ho you can pick her up and weigh her without having to handle her to my previous post.

We have had some rather spectacular misses in diagnosing a pregnancy. If you keep your girl on our recommended general diet without too much carrot or sweetcorn and a limited amount of pellets, then that should actually help with both making your girl as fit for a birth and help to reduce an flab.
The big weight gain usually only happens in the last 2-3 weeks of a pregnancy, but how much very much depends on the size of the litter; it can vary between 30g (which is also the normal weight gain for a younger piggy) to 140g with a large litter - in which case you cannot miss it.
