Junior Guinea Pig
I'd like to share a few pictures and memories a year to the day the last of my 'Herd' passed on.
Dear Poppet, I look back over the pictures I have of you and think of you often.
I was in a garden centre in 2006 and saw you popcorning round in a pen with your two sisters. I couldn't bear to see you left by yourself when your sisters were bought, so I took you home.
You were so little!
I shouldn't have worried about the rest of the herd not accepting you, but you did test their patience I'm sure! Stealing veggies right from under their noses and jumping on top of the pigloo where they couldn't follow you!
I remember when you all went to stay at a very nice lady's house for your own holiday when we went on ours, and you were quite naughty, using your small size to your advantage and coming and going as you pleased from the run. I suppose the grass is always greener and all that!
You were always first to lead everyone over for a treat...
But after a few years, the herd one by one went to Rainbow Bridge, until just you and Sherbet remained. You must have realised when he began to get ill, as you let him go to the bowl first at breakfast and dinner.
After Sherbet passed on you came up the country from Bristol to Stafford to come and live with me and your new 'Daddy' while I continued with uni. The idea always was that we would look for a friend for you.
You soon established yourself in your new home, and especially loved your Daddy, who had never met a guinea pig before. I would often come home to find you both sat down listening to music, or watching TV. You especially loved it when Daddy used to play drum sounds on his phone, he used to call you his 'little pigeon' when you purred!
It is a year to the day that I found you in your cage, having passed in the night. The night before you had given no indication you were ready to go. You had a few hours of floor time, snuggled up with us to watch a film, and then shrieked for your cucumber before you went to bed.
We both miss you a lot, Poppet. I wish you hadn't gone. I often think that you could still be with us, popcorning around with the newest piggy additions to the family, but I am sure you are enjoying the Bridge with the rest of your herd.
