http://www.guinealynx.info/feet.html#injury
and her toe is swelling but my parents car is broken at the mo 8... but my dad is getting his car fixed tomorro so he said he will take me to the vets when hes done, but is there anything i can do for her now?8...

I've not had to deal with this before but my instinct is to bathe it gently with some cooled boiled water. If she is having trouble walking then restrict the space she has to sleep in tonight so that she can't run about too much and make sure she has clean bedding. I would take her to the vet in the morning in case she needs painkillers or possibly antibiotics if there is a risk of infection.

Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will be around soon with more advice.
Bigs hugs hun. She'll be ok.

thank you very much for the help :rose i was beggining to think no one was going to reply :{ luckely my dad has just made tea so he has boiled some water, so i put some in a cup then in the fridge to cool, then i will bath her toe in it, she is acting normal, the only thing I'm worried about is the pain and the swelling 8...

Okay, first, take a deep breath! I can assure you it looks a hell of a lot worse than it is! If her nail has come off, there will be what looks like an insane amount of blood. As there's a heavy blood supply to the feet, any cut/toenail mishap can look like she's lost a foot!

You want some warm water to bathe her foot in, then if it is still bleeding you want some cotton wool pads/kitchen roll soaked in warm water (slightly salted if you're worried that any nasty bacteria or dirt has got in there) and you need to firmly press on the affected toe to stop the bleeding. Once it's stopped there's not a great deal you can do but leave it be and let nature take its course in healing. As piggy feet are so small, a bandage is out of the question (though you could try a small plaster wrapped around her foot just as protection).

I hope you're both okay! Don't panic :)

right, i haved boiled water in the fridge to cool, soon i will bath her foot in it, but her toe is loads bigger and redder than her other toes, tomorrow my dad is buying me some styptic powder and taking her to the vet but I'm at school but I'm not sure if hes at work so i will ask him to take her asap tomorrow, ok panic over :(|)

tomorrow if the vet gives her stuff for pain and to stop infection, around how much will this cost? i do not mind ATALL how much it is, i only ask so i can tell my dad he needs to take around that amount of money :)

The swelling is absolutely normal, it's her body's way of sending in the cavalry to get to work healing it :). It'll be swollen for a few days but piggies heal remarkably fast, so chances are in a day or two you (and her!) won't even notice it happened :). Ripped toenails, while looking absolutely awful, heal up quickly and her toenail will (if she's not ripped the whole lot out) start to regrow very soon. :)

The powder possibly won't be much help tomorrow, though it would be handy to have around if your piggie accidentally catches her toe on something again! :)

Oh, I forgot to mention, if after you've bathed her foot the bleeding hasn't stopped and you have to squeeze on it for a while, she will struggle and she will wheek but please don't let that put you off. I promise you that with some of her favourite yummies after it'll be as if you never had to do it!

If I'm being perfectly honest, I wouldn't take her to the vets unless it starts to look worse in a couple of days. Guinea pigs are very resilient little critters and once she's had a little while to settle down after the hoo-hah, chances are she will be back to normal and wont notice it! It's definitely not enough to impact on her day to day activity. The best thing would be just to keep it clean and keep an eye on it to check that the swelling gets better over the next 24-48 hours and the redness starts turning purple (bruising - a sign that things are sorting themselves out as they should be!)

However, if you do want her to go to the vets just to be on the safe side, the medications will be very cheap because she would only need a day or two's supply, so not even £5 for the medicine, plus whatever your vet charges as an appointment fee. :)

My Basil had one of his nails ripped out by another piggie during a fight. As ghostbusterbunny has said already, the amount of blood is very distressing but it does stop. And the swelling is perfectly normal. And I can assure you it will be ok, Basil is fine now and there was never any infection. I just checked it daily for a few days and made sure he was walking ok.

She will be fine :)

One of my piggies tore her nail off- there was a TON of blood which scared the heck out of me, but no lasting harm done. It did take about six months for the nail to grow back in though- she had ripped it off right where it meets her knuckle. I cleaned it up (gently) with sterile saline on cotton balls, and held her foot slightly to apply some pressure to it. I kept an eye on it for infection or any signs of pain, but she seemed really unperturbed by the whole thing- actually her cagemate was way more agitated than she was! No antibiotics and no vet visits, though I would have taken her in if she was limping or otherwise acting uncomfortable or if there was heat/swelling/pus or other signs of infection. HTH a bit!

Antibiotics shouldn't cost too much, usually under 10 for a week's supply.
In terms of painkillers, it'll depends on which one they give. My piggy was given metacam for a broken leg (an antiinflammatory and painkiller) and that only came in a 10ml bottle and costs around £20 i think.

I suspect the loss of nail is like one of us humans having our nails pulled out from the nail bed....bleeds lot, a bit painful and swollen but settles down very quickly and takes time for the nail to grow back.

Hi Zoe, hope Zebby is feeling okay now. Pixel lost one of her nails when she was little too and aside from the blood, it didn't bother her at all.

As Ghostbusterbunny suggests, I would just keep your eye on it for a day or so to make sure no infection gets into it. Pixel's toe healed up just fine and gave her no trouble at all without anti-biotics. The nail even grew back in a few months and now I can't even remember which toe it was :))

Zoe i'm so sorry to hear about little Zebby's nail :(
Whee hope that her little foot settles down quickly!

Sending some loving healing wheeeeeeeeks for Zebby xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

thank you for the help everybodyxx she is fine now she is walking fine and acting normal:)
