Hi, I'm new to this forum because my guinea-pig has a strange lump on her side.
It's reasonably big, and we took her to the vet.
They weren't sure if it was an abcess or a tumour, but as she's eating fine and her heart, lungs and temperature are all fine they weren't worried. I however, AM worried, as she is very precious, and I'm going away for 2 weeks tomorrow. I'm not 100% confident in the person she's staying with's abilities.
Could you please give me some advice on how to tell the difference between an abcess and a tumour and whether or not it's likely to be life-threatning? Thanks.

If you can give your location hopefully we can recommend a cavy savvy vet in your area. No one on the forum can diagnose let alone advise treatment, once you have a confirmed diagnosis we should be able to give targeted advice.

Did they do a needle aspiration of the bump? In my experience, this is how the vets have diagnosed abscesses on my pigs... they would puncture the mass with a needle and see what was inside. Generally abscesses are full of pus that can then be expressed and it will be apparent that you are dealing with a cyst of abscess as opposed to some sort of solid mass. If the vet you saw wasn't able to identify the lump, I would definitely see another vet. Hopefully someone can recommend one near you!
