Hi guys ,didn't come here for a long time :) ,we have a small problem that requires advice ,8 days ago i saw a small lump (pee size ) on right side just below front teeth ,that lump grew in a day from pee size to a bean size ,i took my piggy to a vet and we got a Xray and diagnose from a Vet College chirurgy professor is that it is an abcess and that it is an by it self abcess not having to do anything with teeth (piggy is under 2 year old male that is huge ,wheys 1250grams messured 2 days ago ,and functions normaly )professor said since they are so fragile animals and that he is so strong and has no problems in every day life that i should let it go for a couple of days to see what will happen ,i did that and after 2 days abcess shirnk to a marbel size ,he said that i should apply some cream on it ,and i asked for Hametum cream whitch he said its fine ,that was 5 days ago and i applyed the cream 2 times a day with maybe small results .Since today is eight day i taught that abcess will burst by now but the lump is hard and not painful at all .We are ready for bursting (i have saleen and antibiotic creams ) .My question is what should i do ,should i wait or ?For him even a trip to the vet and all those strange hands on him were a stress not to mention if we have to go to a vet again :/ (Sorry for my bad spelling ,English is not my native language :) )

Please reply people ,i need some advice ,i read some threds on Abcess theme but if anyone has some idea i am open for opinions :) ?

Our 2 year old sow, Minky got an abscess in May & had an op to remove it. Seemed to be a successful op but it came back after 5 or 6 weeks so had op to remove it. This time it was left lumpy & after another visit to the vet decided to change vets to one who was recommended to me by local rescue. The abscess came back again & asked new vet to remove it. This time, touch wood it seems to have been successful. I don't know about creams but after the second op when I changed to new vet there was a drain hole left & this had to be kept open till fluid had drained. We had to insert a moist cotton bud & twist it. Gwen who runs the local rescue suggested adding Manuka honey so we asked vet about this and she said it was OK. The abscess healed up but I think because there were some lumps left inside it came back. If these had been removed during op she wouldn't have need 3rd op.

Your piggy's abscess seems to be a different type to the type that Minky had. Has your vet prescribed oral antibiotics such as Baytril or Septrin?

No since it grew from nothing to bean size in a day-day and a half ,and got 2 times smaller the next day without antibiotics or anything he said that i should apply only cream (in my case Hametum ,cream from Germany that is best for abcesses ,ulcers ,hemorrhoids and such things ) and since he is alone in cage ,and not in contact with other animals ,he thinks that it shouldnt get anything and that his metabolism will desolve it .He said that place where the abcess is ,is full of blood vessels and things that even a draining could damage and he could die from it ,so the last option is any operation or draining .Belive it or not this thing from afternoon till now (1:36 after midnight ) got from hard to soft ,and is ready to puncture any hour now .As my vet said this thing is a product of somthing like hay ,food ,or even a mosquito bite injury that flamed up really fast ,since they are inclined to abcesses it is not anything to panic ,main thing that every piggy owner should do if their pig has abcess anywhere in teeth area is to get X-ray (from top and on a side ) to be sure that teeth don't have anything to do with it since their teeth roots could flame up even from hay puncture -.- god really f*cked those little guys up xD they can die from anything ://

Could be an insect bite & his system is fighting it. They're commonly caused by fighting such as a dirty nail giving a scratch but that isn't the case here. If it does burst then you'll just have to keep it clean till it heals. Applying a little honey, particularly Manuka is a great aid to this. Before penicillin was developed, honey was used a lot on wartime casualties to prevent infection. I hope it heals up quickly.

Let me tell you a secret, my grandpa was godfather to one of my country's biggest honey producers ,so the thing that is used as antiseptic or healing supstance in honey is propolis ,it is than extracted ,you can buy it as cream ,liquid ,drops...BUT the thing is to buy organic one without alcohol ,the alcohol one if best medicine if you have soar throat or those pus caps in tonsils ,it will burn you like you are touched by the devil himself but it is the only thing that will really help :)Where am from (Serbia) you even have a honey viagra (somekind of afrodisiac ,that really works ) so you can get all kinds of things based on honey ,and we have honey fairs even :) When i tried to remeber what could have happend to him so he got the abcess i remeberd that i bought him those sweets on stick (danderlion flavourd ) and that he ate them very fast (he is quite a eater ,example 1250-1300grams is his average wheight )so he could hurt a tender spot between front and back teeth .Since am in Serbia now ,here is not a great place for having any exotic animal and private vets will take your soul for even a checkup so i took him to vet. collage they have a great clinic there and after yelling ,allmost got in fight with surgeon guy (he started playing games on me after waiting for 4-5 hours to see the pigggy ) so one of students took me to their professor who basicly saved my guineas life by stoping (as surgeon said only option surgery ) and as i said the thing is getting ready to burst ,today it is a bit sore ,like redish and only explanation for that i think it that there is thick skin on their head area and it is not easy to burst ? :S
