So ive got home from night shift and my beloved Poe has a pea sized lump developed on the left side of his jaw.

He has let me touch it but I'm not sure whether he is in pain or not.

He's had 1 drop of Metacam and is seeing Uncle Simon at 5pm

Still munching on hay like a trooper but does seem quieter than usual.

What is the usual treatment for abcess?

Also does Maloclusion cause lumps like that!?

I'm hoping its just a bit of food stuck maybe....

He is seeing the best person. If it is an abscess Simon may leave the wound open so you can flush it every day and prescribe Zithromax. It all depends what it is. It could even be a cyst. Is he eating other food ok?

@MintyAndGarry (TEAS) and @furryfriends (TEAS) will know more.

Lots of love to little Poe.
Yeah he has eaten pellets and veggies. Drinking ok but he does look a little uncomfortable x

If he has abcess or ongoing dental issues I'm scared to death I won't be able to look after him. Especially with the long hours I do :(

If you need help with dealing with an abscess, then I can help. What I can't commit to at the moment is full supportive care (full time syringe feeding) as it is my busy time of year for my paid work and Emma is also on holiday for the next few weeks, so I have all her lot to look after too.

Once you have seen Simon, give me a ring if you need any help. I have dealt with many abscesses, and I am very proficient at flushing and all the care involved.

Thank you Debbie. If it is an Abscess do they heal quickly? What causes them?

Depending on the severity they can take a while, or resolve quite quickly. There can many reasons why they happen, but I have always had a good outcome.

The key to success is a good antibiotic, which you are guaranteed by going to Simon, plus effective flushing.

:D I wish I had an "Uncle Simon" down here! Then my boy might have survived after his jaw abscess was opened up. But it was much bigger than Poe's when I discovered it.

Poor guy! I've had two pigs with jawline abscesses. We went through this with Sundae a couple of years ago. The abscess was opened under general anesthesia, cleaned out and drained. She was on antibiotics and I would irrigate it once or twice daily to give it time to heal from the inside out. It was time-consuming and rather gross for me and unpleasant for her, but she made a full recovery. Having a good vet seems to make all the difference- I lost a piggie to a similar problem a few years before, but it was more of a result of an incompetent vet and me not being experienced enough to realize that he was an incompetent vet. With a good vet, as you have, I would expect a good outcome! Hope he makes a full recovery! It's great that he is still eating... Sundae had dental issues for months leading up to the abscess puffing up enough to be noticeable, and was syringe fed for a bit right around the time of surgery because she was hungry but couldn't chew or open her mouth enough to eat on her own!

How did he get on with uncle Simon? (i love that.... Uncle Simon lol)
:nod:i had to click on each pigture too for it to show up, sorry i have no experience of dental abcesses on my piggies, but sending healing vibes & a speedy recovery for Poe,:luv::tu:

All of us at TEAS love Uncle Simon! :luv:

SO Poe had a thorough check up. Fortunately no abscess but he did have food particles such as hay Inside the pocket of his mouth. Also a substance which Simon descRibed as like a white soggy bread!

Full health check and his teeth are good. No issues. Simon cleaned the goop out.

Simon advised if at all worried about thrush if he gets bunged up again with food he advised Daktarin oral gel and a clean of the pocket. Strange how he suddenly got this built up.

I am thinking it may have been where he had been chewing the shower curtain liner. Little monster ate correx so I got rid of that in the first place.

He did squeal alot at Simon today when his jaws where being checked with a look of total disgust but as usual Simon just called him sweetheart and he settled down

So glad it isn't anything nasty although I need some advice from a lovely local lady on how to clean out cheeks so will be ringing Debbie over the next few days :)

Aww poor little poe, he's a bloody cutie!
Your so lucky you have TEAS and Simon to go to. I wish there was anything as good here.
