Was wondering if anyone had had their piggies diagnosed with ovarian cysts? My 1 +1/2 year old has a large fluid filled abdomen and ovarian cyst. She was diagnosed as being pregnant by one vet this morning who performed a scan and confirmed this even tho I was adament i have another girly at home! Anyhow 2nd opinion and xray has confirmed very large fluid filled tummy and abdomen & operation req tomorrow morning ! Please can anyone advise if this has happened to their piggy and how successful these operations are! She is eating and acting normal, the vet has said surgery is required urgently because of the excessive fluid, it is pushing her diaphram. They want to investigate. The vet is experienced with piggies, as the surgery is at pets at home. I am disgusted with my own vets who have dangerously misdiagnosed!

Having ovarian cysts is one thing. However having fluid in the abdominal cavity can mean any number of things including heart problems, infection and viral things. However i dont know the full history of the pig. Ovarian cysts can sometimes be sucessfully treated with hormone injections and its not always necessary to operate. As a personal opinion (though please dont take this personally) i dont trust the vets in Pets at Home as i really dont trust the shop at all! In my opinion i would get to a much better vets. Fluid in the abdomen can be serious and simply opening your piggie up under aneasthetic may not be the simple answer and may make things worse. Let us know your location if you wish and we can advise you on a piggy savvy vets. Your vet need to drain the fluid first (with a needle) and send it for analysis not just open her up causing more issues.

I'm in Flixton Manchester, the vet at pets at home showed me the X-ray and the area of fluid filled her whole abdomen. If * know of a reputable piggy vet in Manchester please let me know. I'm really confused now & don't know what to do for the best, I would have thought that the vets there would have guinea pig knowledge. Help!

And she's only one and half no other probs, eating drinking as normal.

I'm sorry to confuse you. I'm not in the manchester area. I will have a look to see if i can find a vets for you. We have a list of recommended vets at the top of this section. Have a look there.

Its just the thing that gets me is the fact they want to open your pig up. If any large amount of abdominal fluid is found in cats/dogs we never ever rush into the idea of surgery, we do more diagnostic tests to find out exactly why the fluid is there and drain it by abdominalcentisis (with a needle tap). It just makes no sense to me. If your piggie has something like heart failure causing the fluid build up, putting her through surgery when she is otherwise well and putting strain on a failing heart (as an example) is foolish and dangerous.

I'm so sorry its making things worse?

I get the impression because her tummy is so extended and hard on both sides, she does look pregnant, he feels it necessary to go in & have a look. I could see the cysts on X-ray but the mass of fluid was enormous. She has never had any probs & is still eating & drinking as normal, he did explain the risks of the procedure but said there were no other alternatives as her tummy is so big and they need to fo this asap. She's booked to go in at 8.30 am, I took her there as no other vets were open.

Random. I guess its going to be up to you. I would get a 2nd opinion to be honest. I have messaged a rescue closeby to see if they know of a good vets, I'm hoping they'll get back to me soon.

I completely agree with what Abinurse has said...and if the fluid is pressing on her diaphragm then yes it is an emergency situation.

These vets (partic Aidan) are well known for being extremely experienced with piggies
http://ashleigh-veterinary-centre.com/Staff.html

and Molly Varga now works here
http://cheshirepet.com/our-services/veterinary-referral-services/

As it's a bank hoiday it;s worth checking if they provide their own out of hours cover with their regular vets or whether they contract it out to another practoce (who may not be so experienced)

Try ringing and ask to speak to a vet first to explain the situation and ask what they would do.

Hope this helps
