Hello, guys. I have a question. Could you please answer me? So I smell a bit weird inside the plastic hay bag that I bought a few days ago. I would like to know what the smell is if it is moldy hay.

Hello :)

Hope you and your piggies are well

plastic often smells a little bit it is not unusual at all. Moldy hay absolutely stinks so you would know in my experience - I am sure it is fine, have a quick look if hay looks fine that it all okay

If the hay feels dry then all will be fine

I think the hay does not have white or black dots. However, it smells not like before.

Will hays be damp and dry again so the hays look fine? Is this a case?

I’m afraid that smell is subjective, so we can’t tell what your hay smells like. If it doesn’t have mould spots on it I am sure it will be absolutely fine.

You could always take the hay out of the plastic bag and put it in a cotton bag like a pillow case or duvet cover, leave it for a couple of days and see if it still smells weird. Mouldy hay really stinks.

I had a bag of mouldy hay once, and it really really smells bad... like disgusting bad..... if it just smells abit different then remove the plastic like suggested for a few days.

Thank you guys. I think the hay smells different but maybe it is just because of there are many hays in the plastic bag. They don't have black spots on it. So it is fine right? It will not grow mold.

Sorry about interrupting you guys again. So I discover some hays are black. Is it normal? It is not the black spot on green hay, but it is like black hay withered in some way. Is this a problem of mold?

If it doesn’t smell it’s okay. Take out the blackened ones and don’t feed them.

Being a natural product, some will look different from others as it will potentially be from different types of grasses if you are feeding a meadow mix. As previously advised, if it smells fresh then it will be fine

Hay colour and appearance can vary a lot.
Every bag is different.
Just give it a quick sniff to check it is ok and if there is the odd bad strand chances are your piggies will just eat around them anyway.
Mine are masters of picking out their favourite bits so nothing to worry about.

I get my hay fresh from the local farm. It has all different colours in it and it is fine. My piggies just leave what they don't want to eat.

It will be fine, mouldy hay will be slimy and have a horrible smell, your query has been answered, please don't start any more topics on the same subject, thank you.
