Abscess - Eye

Hi all,

I am looking to this site for a little bit of help and support. I have three lovely little Guinea Pigs called Bon-Bon, Marshmellow and Biscuit.
They are sisters and are coming up to four years old - I rescued them just over two years ago.

Biscuit is not a well girl. She has been to the vets who is really pleased with her progress and the fact that she is eating, drinking, playing and moving around. Biscuit has had an abscess behing her right eye, this has burst and her eye has been pussing since.

I took her straight to the vets when this happened and she was given an injection of antibiotics, some antibiotic drops and some eye drops to help keep the eye clean.

She is back at the vets tomorrow - it is dependent on tomorrows visit as to whether she will need an operation to remove her eye. I am not sure as to whether it looks any better (I think this is because I see and hold her daily)

I feel awful for her, she is so upbeat and happy and was so brave at the vets.

I am just so worried about her as I have heard that guinea pigs do not respond well to operations.

Has anyone else been through anything like this with their Guinea pigs?

I do not mind paying whatever it takes to help my little lady!

Hi there - hopefully I can give you some help. I've had a poorly pig with an abscess behind the eye - it ruptured and vented from under the eyelid, pretty gross stuff!. Initially he was on Septrin, but once the abscess burst and the eye returned to its normal place in the socket the pus was venting behind the eye affected him neurologically. He developed head drift (as opposed to head tilt).

At this point he was put on azithromycin and within days he was much improved and by the end of the treatment he had recovered completely and has full use of his eye.

This is after the abscess ruptured and the eye went back in place - as nasty as this looks, it was even worse when the eye was being pushed out.

If your vet in not familiar with using azithromycin in guinea pigs please ask them to contact Simon Maddock (my vet did when I asked for it for Fergus), his advice saved my pig and his eye.

Thank you very much indeed Suzy. I will be sure to pass this information on to my vet. She did say she had some experience in this area but onky 4-5 times a year which worried me as it does not sound many (but think it is positive to know not many guinea pigs are going through this. Thankyou again for your help and support x
