I have just taken my guinea pig to the vet and he said its an abscess (larger than a golf ball) - appeared so quickly. He has given some antibiotics but said it won't go with this and it really needs removing. My guinea pig is still eating which is good. The operation will cost £300! This is such a lot to pay and i am unsure if it will go and my guinea pig will pull through the operation. Any advice appreciated?

Where do you live? We have a Recommended Vets link on the green bar. It’s certainly worth ringing around to get a quote, some vets are a lot cheaper than others. We see a vet Simon Maddock at the Cat and Rabbit Clinic in Northampton, he is very reasonably priced and very experienced piggie vet

If you can get the whole abscess capsule removed surgically this is by far the best option, piggy might be better in a week. A big abscess wont just "go" with antibiotics, there will still be nasty infected gunk that needs removing surgically in one go, or you will need you to manually squeeze and flush it out daily over a few weeks yourself leaving piggy with a big sore open wound and you with a couple of hours nursing care to give every day! I would go with the surgery, a golf ball plus sounds awful, we had a marble size abscess and paid £200 for it removing which I thought was pretty reasonable considering the alternative scenarios!
