Abscess Returning

My dental pig's teeth are overgrowing every two weeks at the moment, I can tell when she needs to see Simon when she starts dropping pellets & is slower eating her veg x

Yes I think I will try and get in with Simon. She's eating quicker but does pull some funny mouth movements occasionally. Worst timing as I'm not going to be able to do til a week on Saturday due to work commitments. Her last dental will be two weeks next Tuesday so as long as I can keep her weight maintained I hope she will be ok

Well I'm not happy with how she's going so I'm going to ring in the morning. Hopefully I can get her in on Saturday and will have to skip house viewings with the in laws or I can possibly get out of Friday afternoon at work

I doubt you'll get an appt on Saturday but you may be able to get a Friday afternoon one. Ring first thing. They open at 8.30 am xx

I will do what I can to get her in asap. It's not so much the timing of appointments but getting from work and then doing the hours drive (if there's no traffic). I'll keep my fingers crossed until I know more. I might be able to get Tuesday afternoon off work as well

OK I've booked annual leave for Monday as the first appointment I could get was 10:30 Monday and they hope to do the dental after morning surgery. I know there's a few shops there but is there a coffee shop nearby where I can sit with a tea and a book?

One of my girls - Toffee had abscess under her chin. First three operation were flushed out and it kept coming back then the vet turned around and said sometimes it's best to put them to sleep because they are suffering but in my eyes she's absolutely fine it just lump is in the way as she is eating/drinking and going to loo without any problem but abscess kept getting bigger so I took second opinion and went to Northampton cat and rabbit clinic and what they've done was open it up and flush and took a sample of abscess and send it off to the lab to see what antibiotics can tackle and turns out none antibiotics apart from zithromax so we had three months worth of zithromax and touch wood the abscess never came back. Toffee been a good fighter there been one or two moments where the vets thought we would lose her.
I recommend to find out what antibiotics can tackle the abscess (probably zithromax)

Not sure yet what I am doing on Monday, but if you find yourself with time to spare, give me a ring or drop me a text and we can maybe meet up? xx

oh my life it's one thing after another. I was off work ill yesterday so syringed some food just after 9pm and went to do the same at 1pm (she is still eating a bit by herself but not enough). Only when I got her out you could see her sides pulsing as she breathed and she was making a bit of a clicky noise. Straight off to the vet and they believe that she has fluid on her chest but were unable to confirm as she wasn't cooperating for the xrays! So lets add another problem to the list for poor little Isobel! She has baytril and zantac to tide her over the weekend until we see Simon on Monday morning at which point I'm going to ask him to look at more than just her teeth. This poor little lady has had a rough couple of months.

Poor you! Fingers very firmly crossed for Isabel! She may need a diuretic.

My vet did warn me with my dental pig that they can aspirate food more easily once their teeth overgrow :( I agree with Wiebke, she really needs a diuretic like Furosemide if your vet hasn't prescribed any then she needs some before Monday, she can't wait that long :(

Thanks but I can't get to a knowledgeable vet now as the emergency ones around here are not good with piggies so I would only go if it were an emergency. Isobel is still bright and lively, I can't hear any clicking sounds now and haven't at all today so hoping she is ok til Monday. I will be monitoring her very closely.

Have only just seen this. From what you are describing and the fact that it has now stopped, would suggest it was just a bit of food obstructing the airway at the back of the throat. I have often had this happen with piggies who have dental issues. It is due to them not being able to manipulate the food around their mouth properly.

Well I've been and I'm already home, no waiting around. We saw Kim and are booked in again a week on Saturday. I was prepared for dropping her off. I had Debbies number in my phone, a book and my crochet lol but didn't need any of it.

Isobel is a little fighter. Kim is lovely and I think she is preparing me for potentially saying goodbye. The teeth are overgrown again though not as much as expected. Her right eye is protruding ever so slightly which could indicate an abscess behind the eye or elongated roots. Her lower jaw abscess is back but not enough to be drained and she has suspected pneumonia so they couldn't risk the operation even if it was big enough. She also has a bone abnormality that could be triggering the teeth problems rather than the abscess being the cause so it's touch and go for how this will pan out.

So it's extreme antibiotics and pain relief and see how she is in 2 weeks. If it turns out that the bone abnormality is going to cause her pain and discomfort for the rest of her life then I will need to let her go before she suffers too much.

Today she's had a stint in the oxygen tent and her teeth burred while she was conscious so it's just whether these medications work and whether they work quick enough to stop too much scarring to her lungs

Kim was my main contact when Anselmo had to see the vet, I think I saw her around 20 times over the few years and she was always great. Very honest and let me know exactly what she thought. And if she had any queries, or thoughts she's go through them with Simon.

Fingers crossed that the antibiotics help her, and she has lots of time with you before you have to let her go.
