hello its me yet again (it all seems to be happening at once!)

1 of my guinea pigs has swelling on his cheek on closer investigation it seemed like a little abscess i've never had to deal with one before so i got some tissue and some cooled boiled water and gave it a little bit of a sqeeze and it popped and loads of white smelly pus came out it really was rather gross! :P

anyway i'm not sure what to do now ive cleaned it and he seems fine should i be doing anything else?

not sure but think I have seen other posts where you need to keep it clean and flushed out with warm salt water, also keep an eye on it in case it gets infected which would need antibiotics from the vet.

hope he is ok now :smitten: :smitten:

gently squeeze any puss out each day, bathe with salty water, you will have to take the scab off each time, you want the wound to heal from inside out,you can gently clean out the wound with cotton buds making sure you remove all the puss

Yes, antibiotics come first. Next, it needs to be checked to see if it is a one time thing or if there is a bad tooth that needs to come out or be trimmed. Otherwise, it will just keep happening and could kill him/her.

I back flush abcess craters with Hibitane diluted.High Potency Manuka Honey is then packed into the hole. This should be done twice a day for up to 4 days.

thanks everyone there doesn't seem to be a crater yet its only a little hole! his got so much fur i can't get a good view!

carefully clip off the fur surrounding the abcess, then you can get a good view of it each time you clean

Oh dear sorry to hear about your piggie :'( :'( :'(
Well done you've got rid of the rotten abscess, as Mary said clean it out for a few days O0 O0 O0 O0
Healing wheeks coming your way :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

well my best friends guineapig died of an abcess...it was sad...just keep an eye on him/her. if he/she can't get up off the ground and is reallly unactive take it straight to the vet immediatly....
goodluck....tell me whats happens and if it gets better....

:( i think my guinea has an abcess too, it burst last time i gave him a bath and i tried to squeeze out all the yucky stuff but i obviously didnt do it right as its back again, i just squeezed it tonight as it has filled up again - but reggie my piggie really is unhappy about me doing it, it puts me off if it hurts him

so is it likely to heal itself if i manage to get all the pus out and flush it with salt water? how do you flush it out, with a syrine of salt water? the hole of the abcess is not big enough to get a cotton wool bud in

i really didnt want to have to put him through the stress of going to the vets, they werent much help last time i went

its on his back and when open i put on aloe vera gel so it doesnt get infected.

when honey had one on her chest I took her to the vet and he/she squeezed out all of the puss and put her on antibiotics.  Every day I kept squeezing it, I got a syringe and squirted the scab with warm salt water, I then used kitchen towel and softly wiped the puss away because if you use cotton wool it can stick (yuck  :D ).  Honey's all cleaned up fine,  I think some guinea pigs who get them regularly need an operation to remove them if they keep coming back.  O0 good luck  O0

keep up with the squeezing and salt water because it fills with puss again x

what do abscesses feel like....do they burst very easily?

they are sort of hard, but they are loose you can feel they dont go far under the skin(I know what I mean :D ) It probably depends on whether it scabs over, honeys at the begining stayed gooey so it was fairly easy, it began to get smaller, when it got really small I let it scab over and heal :)

Are you sure this is a abscess and not a sebaceous cyst?.The back is a slightly unusual place for an abscess, although of course they can occur anywhere. Was the muck very smelly?.,or was it more like toothpaste consistancy>

i'm glad to report that the abcess has all cleared up now the hole wasn't big enough to pack it but i just took the scab off every morning emptied the pus out (yuk :P ) after a day or 2 the pus stopped smelling (again yuk :P ) and a couple of days later there was no pus at all (hurrah! :D ) so his all better now. Thanks everyone! :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

nah it wasnt really smelly, it was a grey colour and mushy

i cleared it out properly the other day, its quite small, been clearing it out with salt water everyday, it looks great, hopefully it will heal from the inside out and he wont need a vets visit

looking good at the moment :o)
